Extremely large outdoor woodchip bed
    #17347671 - 12/06/12 11:21 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

So, my dreams have finally come true, and several cubic yards of finely chipped red alder have fallen into my lap. Quite literally. A work crew has been clearing ivy-enwrapped, hazardous trees from a park adjacent to my property. They left the wood for the neighborhood to use. Right at the edge of my property is where they piled it! I almost don't have to move it at all.

So obviously, I now need some big plans to go along with this big-ass load of alder chips. I also have a cord or so of red alder logs. The logs I intend to innoc with shiitake dowels. The chips, I think you know what I'm thinking of doing with those... Funny thing -- I'm not really into shrooms any more, or at least, it's very difficult to find an appropriate time to eat them. But I would love to get a huge patch going just to look at, and hopefully get enough spores floating around my neighborhood to start spreading the stuff around a bit.

Obviously I need to make a shit-ton of spawn. And I have no way of storing this much material over the winter in a way that keeps it out of the rain. Anybody have advice? On anything: spawn-making, preserving the chips until I can spawn them in spring, how to locate the bed, etc. Greatly appreciated.

PS: I don't mind failure, or wacky ideas -- this whole load of wood was free, and I consider this an opportunity to experiment.
