white speckles on hay

I have, within the past 5 days, made 5 mini-mono tubs. Of those 5 tubs, two have small white speckles all over the top layer of uncolonized hay. I assume its a mold, and maybe my these two have more moisture in there. Has anyone ever encountered this?

hmm...to hard to tell without pics. if you cased it could be almost colonized and thats why its appearing out of the top, if not than its most likely a contam. what was your ratio? did you use only straw as your sub?

im pretty sure its mold... it has that earthy moldy smell, and is only on the top , and it seems incredibly fine 1.5% hydrogen peroxide helps.. how do you control mold in tubs??? i removed the top to evap. out some of the excess moisture maybe that'll help slow it..
the container is a little over 6qts to the top of the container, and I put about 1.5 qts of spawn-- I can see the mycellium popping up near the moldy areas so its not that.. thanks for your guys help..

It could very likely be trich, which seems to cleverly disguise itself as white specks (clearly visible on sunflower shells in WBS). I've even had it hide inside the middle or tops of spawn jars, exploding all over a full tub, wasting everything. It's inspired me to be much more careful in assuring there's no contamination coming from a donor jar used for G2G purposes or whatever. For me, it carried through several sets of jars before I finally realized it was contaminated...lots of wasted work

Also, hay is particularly susceptible to contamination for some reason? Or so I've always read..there was an RR quote about it

here is the heaviest spot, the moisture seems way too high for 89 degrees.. I tried to take the tops off hopefully thatll help.. I caught it in hours, and I already pulled out most of the bad hay with forceps... and treating with peroxide. I'll just make a new experement.. lol

any stage of contaminant growth is pretty much a failure, and typically its not worth trying to save. As soon as that starts sporolating you won't want that within 100 ft of your grow area.. Why risk ruining future grows? Toss that shit
