PC or Steam Sterilize BRF jars?
    #17345009 - 12/06/12 03:11 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Ok so the new AA PC I ordered finally came in the mail today. I'm about to make 30 BRF jars. My question is, should I still steam sterilize them because I've always done it that way, or should I use the new PC to sterilize? What would be easier and more beneficial to the grow process?

Well depending on the size of the aa you migght be able to do all jars in 1 process
(Or pc 1 batch and steam the other, then compare time to do each)

You cant kill something deader than dead...pressure sterilization will work just the same for BRF, no benefits.

Actually, in some cases it has been known to compress the cakes, where as steam sterilization does not.

So if you were in my position, and had 30 BRF jars and a new AA PC as well as a pile of old jar rings and a few nice pots, would you choose to steam them, or toss them in the AA?

Steam....save the PC for grains...but that's just me, it's really your call.

The decision-maker, for me, would be how I planned to fruit them. If you want to just fruit them as cakes, save yourself the hassle and steam them. If you want to use them for spawn, I'd sterilize them.

But now that you have a PC, there's no reason in the world to keep doing cakes IMO. If you must do cakes, you could get spawn bags and do big-ass cakes that colonize quicker (because you can massage them) and flush very well in a SGFC or mini greenhouse.

Brf doesn't need to be P.C'd, steam sterilization is sufficient for the Pf-tek. I always P.C all my spawn but I tend to be on the OCD side. Nothing wrong with insurance though.

I always PC my cakes for 45 minutes.  I can do them all at once in the PC instead of doing a few at a time using steam.

You can always just leave the weight off the PC, it'll only build to boiling point.  My PC is the biggest pot I have in the whole house.

With 30 brf jars to do, the AA will handle them all in one batch.  That's what I'd do.  There is no added benefit from a sterilization standpoint, but from a convenience standpoint, it makes sense.
