Heating whole room not an option. Is heating greenhouse lost cause?
    #17333107 - 12/04/12 02:26 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

im reading up old threads on how to heat a greenhouse.  many just saying that if you can only heat the greenhouse itself, you will only run into problems with condensation and such.  any ideas on my options here.  greenhouse will be in a room too large, and not insulated well enough to heat the whole room.  and even if possible, would just cost a boatload in expense to heat.  is there any source of heating that wont cause the condensation problem, or at least add back to lost condensation?

The only thing I could think of would be to use something like THIS with an aquarium heater in the water. That would probably require a lot of tweaking though and since steam tends to cool off pretty quickly once it hits the air I'm not sure it would even work.

Other than somehow insulating the greenhouse itself (which would limit FAE) I can't think of much else, but I'm sure someone else will eventually chime in with a much better idea.

anyone own one of those infrared heaters?  i heard through the grapevine they are really economical.  not sure how true that is though.

You could try building your own mini room.

How I'd go about it:
Build box slightly larger than the greenhouse I want.
Put insulation on the inside.
Build a compartment in the bottom that will allow intake for a heater when it clicks on.
Line the inside with plastic.  This way, you will not have the insulation absorbing the water that forms on the walls, creating mold, or other nasties.

You would have to make your heater compartment so it would open when the heater clicks on, and close when it turns off.  You could get creative with this, with circuits and motors, timers, and what not.  this would allow warm dry air to come in, and seal it off allowing humidity to build.  Integrate a thermostat in there somewhere.

To add humidity, you would just use an ultrasonic as normal.  Set it on a controller that monitors it, and won't click on while the heater is in use.

That's how I'd over-engineer a heated greenhouse.

If you have the skills to program an arduino, this would be a great project.
