I'm fairly torn on this subject though. From a journalistic standpoint, I don't believe that the media or news should be censored just because something is gruesome or of a sensitive nature
i completely agree. My main issue is that at least from my personal perspective, there is a man facing the end of his existence, there are people who love the guy who are likely crushed by this event, and there are magazine editors saying "AWESOME! This is hilarious! Front page! $$$" with no sense of humanity. Gross.
What about people who lost loved ones in the attacks on September 11th, 2001? Or people who lost loved ones in our current wars in the Middle East? Or if someone gets killed in a head-on collision by a drunk and the wreckage is shown on TV? Are those news stories lacking any sense of humanity and gross?
Yeah, exactly. This is where I become torn on the subject. I was actually going to use a comparison to 9/11 but I didn't want to derail the thread too much.
I believe that the media should've reported 9/11 the way they did. I think it was necessary coverage of an extremely impactful event. As a new yorker who did lose people in the attacks, it certainly wasn't easy for me to watch the media coverage but it doesn't mean the news outlets were lacking humanity. It's tough to know where to draw the line. When does reporting the news become a mockery or sideshow of the lives lost? Perhaps a line shouldn't even exist. Censorship is a slippery slope.
I'm still not sure how to feel about this, I suppose. But I do know that the Post is and always has been garbage obviously.

Video of them arresting the pusher and a bit of footage from right before the attack.

My point was it depends on how the the actual story is then reported. Showing somebody jumping out of the building and saying "THIS PERSON IS ABOUT TO DIE! DOOOM!" is not quite the same, TO ME, as showing the picture and captioning it in a way that seriously documents the issue. I accept this is quite a subjective thing, This is why i said it is from "my personal perspective". I do not claim to know an objective answer to this situation. To each their own though i still think it's gross and i'm allowed to, just as they are allowed to publish it, and others are allowed to look at it and go "COOOL"

Sensationalizing death is FAR from new, and by now it shouldn't be shocking or offensive. Whatever feelings the image gives you, it's a very powerful image. That photographer took a million to one shot and I can appreciate its provocativeness, and how it forces us to confront our own mortality. Which in itself is at the root of the controversy; people don't want to see images of death because it reminds them of what they will inevitably face.
