Bags or Jars
    #17337405 - 12/05/12 09:37 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Which do you prefer? Which is most affordable/efficient/easiest to work with.

I currently have about 30 quart jars...

I want to be in the neighborhood of having 60-80 jars in rotation at a time.

Would it be best to invest in working with bags to make the rest?
Or just stick with jars, meaning I would also have to buy and make all the lids for the new jars.

I would be working with
Cubes - G2G - monotubs
Shiitake
Lions Mane
Reishi
Maitake
Oyster
I understand bags will obviously work best for the edibles but working with cubes 30 jars means... at most 5 strains at a time (25 jars left/ 5 jars for g2g for each strain)

Wouldn't it be more efficient have jars to G2G to a bag?  Then just use 1 or 2 big bags to spawn to a tub?

(sorry for long post, writing stuff out like this also help me think better )

Bags work great with edibles. For the cubes, you could move to gallon jars and monotubs.

At around 50 cent each, bags will be more expensive over the long run.

Hmm, funny you say that, I always thought of using gallon jars  they just seem so large.

As opposed to jars being?
I believe a 12 pack of quart jars are around 13.50$ around me.
Making them 1.12$ each not including the work/expenses of the lids.
Is there a reason to use jars for G2G - then to spawn, than bags?

EDIT: Just check Mycosupply and saw that 100spawn bags for 69.95, Im ASSUMING hold over quart of spawn (doesnt specify)

Could you use these efficiently for G2G?  Use jars as masters, and just G2G to your bag, never having to do anything to them other then zip tie them shut making the reusable?

I put 4-5 quarts into a bag and then use a full a full quart jar to g2g into the bag.
The advantages are many inoculation points and a strong culture starting off as opposed to spores.

True, and between the silicone, vacuum tubing and polyfill (or conversely; silicone/tyvek, silicone/filter discs/air ports) the price for a jar is a bit more than that. But I've been using the same jars for years now. Even the lids I drilled 5 years ago that didn't tear the metal are still in use.

The actual work difference will be mostly in usage, and bags are probably the winner in that regard. Bags can be reused a couple times too. If that's done it would bring the cost down but after several years jars would still win. The extra expense for bags could be easily justified in work saved.

The cost difference will be minimal either way. Pick the one you would rather work with.
