Hi there, can anobody point SWIM in the right direction?
    #17334025 - 12/04/12 05:14 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hi guys,

So SWIM is attempting to grow some golden teachers using WBS as the substrate and verm/coco as a casing. He did fine up until the casing ended up with some bad overlay. (As in bad, the entire thing was fluffy white mycelium) So he proceded to patch the whole thing, UNFORTUNATELY he didn't add enough water to the patching material and was a little impatient and decided to move to the fruiting chamber only one day after patching. This is what it looks like

(it was a quick picture he took, sorry bout quality)

Basically  it didn't finish colonizing the patches. He was hoping is there anything he can do to save this casing ? Is it ok to move it back into incubation even though it's already been exposed to fresh air, light, humidity etc? Basically he wants know if there is any chance of it working or is the whole thing dunzo?

Thanks!  :jah:

The right direction for SWIM to go is here, to create his.her own account, instead of relaying info through you.

Casing is meant to be non-nutritive (50/50 peat/verm). Because you used verm/coco, the mycelium went ahead and ate it up. It was colonizing, the all white that you saw.

You should have mixed your WBS into the verm/coco (after pasteurizing or even bucket tekking it), let it colonize, then fruit it.
You can try to keep it in fruiting conditions, but if it isn't colonizing the whole surface now that you "patched" it with more food, it will likely contaminate.

Since it was exposed to fruiting conditions it lost all of it's c02 (high c02 levels are beneficial during colonization)
Thus meaning it has started the fruiting cycle, and even if you place it back into colonization it isn't going to matter.

Just place it back into fruiting and leave it alone for awhile, it's going to be fine as long as it doesn't contam.

Casing is a useless pactice in a monotub (if growing cubensis), despite what you may have heard.
Casing is only beneficial if you cannot give your mushrooms a proper fruiting environment (such as low humidity) and monotubs have no problems providing the proper environment, adding a casing in a monotub is a meaningless means of adding yet another contamination vector.

This is true for cubes, but some species require a casing layer to fruit even if they are in a monotub, but cubes do not benefit from casing unless proper moisture levels cannot be obtained.

good thing you said SWIM. if by chance you happened to omit the acronym SWIM you could have been charged with the crime of cultivating a controlled substance. now everyone who's isn't you has to be on the lookout.
