Interesting post from Mycotopia; I'd like some opinions.

So I found a post on Mycotopia (I don't have an account) about Fractional Sterilization by BuckarooBanzai. In the post he stated he achieved 100% success rate with FS with the following procedure.
1/2 pint wide mouth Mason jars on BRF cakes, and pre-soaked popcorn kernels. Each jar was "simmered" for 60 (90 for popcorn) minutes each day for 3 days with no more than 24 hours between boilings. On day 4 he inoculates them, with a syringe that was previously found to have no contam, under a hood.
Here's a link if you all are interested in reading the post itself. Which is more in depth but lacks pictures.
Intrigued I started doing searches on both this site and Mycotopia, and discovered very conflicting opinions. Over there they seem much more in favor of FS with a number of good stories. Where as here there seems to be much more disapproval and stories ending in mostly failure. Why so much variation in opinion?

You don't even need fractional sterilization with the PF tek. Just steam sterilize like RR shows in the vids.

FS probably does work. Is it advised? No. This experiment obviously worked for the brf cakes, but for the popcorn they were in such small jars that it might have worked, whereas this wouldn't work with quart jars (at least not with such a short cook time)

Even if it works the time cost is horrible.
Get a part time job to pay for the pressure cooker in the hours you would have spent doing this. Then you'll never have to do it. And not care if it works.

I agree with you that FS isn't as reliable as using a PC. And to be perfectly fair I'd only really want to do like a dozen or so 1/2 pint jars right now anyway.
shroom_bee I'm just waiting until after the holidays so I can buy a PC on ebay for dirt cheap . I'm a cheap bastard.

Fractional sterilization is something that needs to be explored more. If you are using a large grain bag, and you can not afford a PC, I would say that success with fractional sterilization would be worth the time if you consider the yield of a mono tub vs a batch of BRF cakes.
I would run a search, I know someone did an experiment with it back in '09 or '10
