What do the lines running down the top holes tell us?
That air is moving in through the top and moving down the tub out the bottom holes?
I always thoughthumid air rose up escaping through the top holes , thus sucking Fresh air in through the bottom?

Normally you would be correct but by having our bottoms holes stuffed tight and tops loose with a fan running air will take the path of least resistance so it will come in the top and be forced out of the bottom

Thanks for explaining. So Tight holes in the bottom and loose in the top is a MUST in order to get passive FAE? , Then you can just leave it alone for the most part??
If you do not do this then i assume you would have to fan it a few times a day and look after it more??

Yea i seen how he does it. He has all his holes on the top and fans 4-6 times a day.
Whats your opinion on that?
I made a tub similar to his ( all holes on top) Although i put 1 small 1 inch hole on the bottom.
And i made a tradition style mono ( holes on the bottom)
Trying them both out.

So far searching in my country we don't have "Polyfill" (:polyfil trade mark) but I can get a $10 pillow made of "Celliant" ("Holofil"). Will that do for airflow? Thanks

Why polyfill instead of tyvek? It wouldnt let the moisture escape and if the holes were big enough it would have more than enough fae

Technically you could. It's more about humidity at the surface level. But without a lid or poly in the holes your subsrate begins to dry out.

Thanks for your posting...I jumped up and taped all my holes that had polyfill (actually microfiber, but more I read that seems too dense anyway)
So, I just want to confirm...
I keep the tape on until FULL colonization...how long do I allow it to sit with the polyfill if already full colonization? Just trying to clarify in my mind.
Is the poly a way to let the CO2 escape without removing from sterile environment?
THANK YOU!

"Here's a few examples of my own personal monotubs I've fruited using this method, these are just coir/verm and gypsum"
So Is your substrate just coir/verm and gypsum?

Tubs are far from sterile.
I use cheap duct tape for colonization. Then once the surface is colonized or nearly there. I take the duck tape off and either stuff the holes with poly or pastys way of using mp tape.
Doesn't matter if u use coir, poo, or straw. You still fruit the tub or the substrate the same way as above.
