For the bottom holes on your mono, it's simple: you'll want to stuff them very tightly to keep fresh air flowing in the top and out the bottom. Citric, a trusted cultivator from shroomery, suggested this most excellent idea.
Why would the air not just go in and out of the top holes? Can someone who knows for sure explain?

I don't get it. It was my understanding that the heat generated by the fungus caused air to rise, and so fresh air should be pulled into the bottom holes. It seems ass backward to me, but maybe somebody can clear that up. I haven't done full size monos, so I never had to worry all that much about FAE.

I think the point is that you have more air movement at the top with air moving more slowly at the bottom to create a better microclimate. I don't think this idea of air moving up and down really has anything to do with anything.
Again the whole point is you have air moving more freely at the top and remaining more still at the bottom with a steady, calm cycle of fresh air entering the tub that will eventually make its way to the surface through the microcurrents.

Wouldnt the opposite be true according to physics?
As hot air rises, it would create a drag effect as it leaves the top holes, drawing in fresh air through the bottom holes?

That seems like it would be the case. But c o 2 is heavier than air and falls out of the bottom holes, pulling fresh air through the top.
If you look at the top holes of a humid monotub, you can observe dry marks going downward from fresh air comming in indicated this fact.
This is my understanding anyway...

This seems to be true, we do observe more evaporation around the top holes. But i've often wondered if that's just because there's more air movement around the weaker polyfil, not necessarily because the air is being drawn in.

well if air was evaporating up and out the top holes, would there be a dry streak on the tub as the air moving up and out would be very humid and moist?
Seems to me the dry mark on the tub is from drier air from outside the tub comming in?
This has been on my mind for a while.
I dont use poly fill, just 1 layer of micro pore tape on bottom and top holes.
