Bulk Sclerotia Teks? Heres my idea!

Hey there shroomery,
Ive been researching sclerotia producing species quite a bit and have been pretty much unimpressed (with a few exceptions) by peoples attempts to grow sclerotia in bulk.
If you're REALLY serious about growing sclerotia, I'm thinking why even bother growing in quart or pint jars? I mean really, whats the yield on a single jar? Not much. Even bags arent remarkably better.
Ive had the idea floating in my head for a large sclerotia grow suitable for a small space where storing cases of canning jars or mycobags isn't the optimal use of the scare space. That's the main idea here, space is a scarcity for this style of grow! If you're going to commit +3 months to a grow, make it count! Go big or go home!
Call me crazy (I know you will), but here is my idea. Id love to hear critiques and improvements/other ideas. Do your best to shoot me down, Id like to see you try!
Monotub Sclerotia Tek 1) Get some plastic storage totes. Whatever size suits your needs. Ideas: They have those under-the-bed containers which might work well for some. For myself, I was thinking 18 gallon storage totes would work well.
Better yet, repurpose an unused monotub. (Hence the tentative name "Monotub Sclerotia Tek")
2) The tub will be set up with at least 1 polyfill (or etc.) hole for GE.
3) Sterilize (PC 1 hr @ 15psi) your substrate/spawn material. WBS, rye, horse manure, a mixture of your leftover substrate materials, whatever you've got, the specifics arent the point.
4) Fill the tote nearly to the brim (maintaining some sterile procedure here, use your head). Then slap the lid on.
5) Inoculate with a clean sclerotia producing liquid culture or grain spawn. Do this how you may, maybe put an injection port on the lid, I dont care about the specifics. Point is, keep it clean!
6) Leave sit for +3 months wherever you have the space for it. Set it and forget it!
7) Harvest!
Alrighty guys thats it.
Whats wrong with it, and why havent I heard of people doing it before. If people currently DO do a tek similar to this, please PM me some links!
Thank for checking it out! -Adrenalien

OK

I see no point unless its super tight, in a regular monotub, the imperfect lid will provide GE, all holes should be taped for colonization.
And in jars for sclerotia, the lid has a filter for GE, if its polyfill, it is super tight.

You cannot inoculate a bulk substrate with LC like that, it will not work. Grain spawn maybe, but you would need a shit ton of jars, i mean at least 30 quarts of spawn alone, to fill the tub half way.
Not to mention the amount of dissapointment you will have in a few months when u realize you just threw all your eggs in one basket and got a contam...now what?
Also bulk substrate should be pasteurized, not sterilized. And grains need a minimum of 90 minutes of sterilization at 15psi, not 60 min.
Thats a lot of time, money and materials to be chancing like that. Especially a noob who obviously still needs to learn some basics.

All very good points.
GE holes most likely wouldnt be needed at all, youre right.
As for the LC, I bet it could work. 1 liter or so and a few months time will do the trick. Colonization doesnt need to be perfect.
I realize this is by no means an optimal design, but I think its execution could be pulled off.
I plan on giving this tek a try anyway to see what will happen. Even if it fails, whats a few bucks in materials and a few hours wasted time in the name of science?

I think u need to do more research before doing that...but to each his own.
Report back on your success/failure.

You can't fill a tub up with substrate and inoculate it. The substrate will become anaerobic in the center.
Who does sclerotia in small jars? Quarts should be considered minimum. If you want to grow bulk, you can put ten quarts of grain in each large autoclave bag from mycelia. Lay the bags flat to colonize as opposed to standing up so they're only about 3" thick. I get stones nearly the size of tennis balls that way. Golf ball sized stones are common. RR

Never done sclerotia before, but I'm about to try that. Motherfucking tennis balls and shit.

That was another major concern I had. I knew the center would receive almost no air at all. I presumed that sclerotia producing species could handle it because so many people boast how well the species can do with neglected GE.
The idea of LARGE bags is great, but ive been trying to think of something I could reuse and repurpose afterwords.
Another idea I had was to get [new] paint cans from the hardware store, the 1 gallon ones, and you could easily stuff that with substrate and PC it like you would a jar. Also, paint cans could inconspicuously be stored in a closet or garage, nobody would think a thing of them.

Why not just use half gallon or gallon sized jars? That way you can see a contam, and your not just guessing for months.

Fine, I guess you win... xP
Glass reigns supreme...
I like the idea of glass gallon and half gallon jars better than my plastic tub idea I suppose.
A gallon of substrate is a healthy amount! Thats much more the scale I was imagining in my head. Doesnt seem like that size jar, or half gallons rather, comes on sale much at the hardware store, but if it does anytime soon Ill be stocking up!

Very good video. Ive seen it before. Their setup is ridiculously awesome. Honestly, Im surprised they still grow in bags, even at that scale and with a facility that high tech. I love that autoclave too, haha. Its literally a whole room xD
