Shroomsweedlsd, now this is just getting rediculous, op asked if anyone knew what they were, someone else replied that it was a contam that makes the caps look that way... That is not the case, these mushrooms grow like that. It's not a contam, it's a mushroom for Christ sakes. That's what I was talking about.

I think they made it through the pasteurization. That's awesome!
Probably a bummer on your cubensis though. I would let them grow and see if the cubensis will grow too. Although I wouldn't eat any of them unless I was very sure they were edible. Also when you throw them out wish them well and throw them someplace they will grow, like in a forest or something. Maybe they are an edible strain that got mislabled but I doubt that.

Thanks Vire... It really is a mushroom. They grow all over the place where I live. But it's listed in the contams list that someone linked to me.

if they made it through pasteurization, would that make his pasteurization technique questionable?

If so, that's your problem
I did. This is only my second time growing and I guess I don't know as much as I thought I did. First time was with rice flower about a year ago. I had good luck with that. Time to start over and do it right.

Yeah, you can't put spores to a bulk sub and hope to succeed. You have to put spores to a jar of grains and use it once its fully colonized to spawn it to the bulk sub.

Shaggy mane. Ink Cap. Inky mane...... Its edible, and choice. Good work. I think everyone is crazy here. You had a contaminated inoculant.
You just won the spore to bulk lotto. Dont expect it to happen again. lol

Thank you. I'll start some jars tomorrow. What grain do you guys think is best for this? I have plenty of manure and straw left, so I think I will try again. Maybe pasteurize a little longer next time.

Not necessarily. He saw a dead one on his straw before pasteurizing, which calls his pasteurization in to question, and he went MS straight to bulk.

Yeah I think pasteurizing is supposed to kill any spores in your substrate.

I see your point. Perhaps shaggy mane is a little more heat resistant, or like you are thinking, not a proper pasteurization.

I use rye berries. but some folks can't get them as easy, so they use wild bird seed(WBS). I've never used WBS, but i hear it's cheaper and trickier to get the moisture right.
The flour you used before worked because it's a grain and u prolly sterilized it, and it was a small amount. then you prolly used it to spawn to bulk. do the same thing this time, except try rye or WBS as your spawn instead of flour

yes to everything except using it to spawn bulk. I fruited them right on the BRF cakes.

When i lived in oregon, i'd see them everywhere after a good rain. even on the side of the road.
I'd stop and pick'em on my way home from work. You have to put your buttered pan on a remote control stove so you can have it hot when you walk in the door. Cuz they turn to ink fast.

I wish some other mushrooms would grow this fast! I can see a difference since I started this thread. I'll post a picture in a minute.

\Guide to Common Contaminate Mushrooms
Quote:
#4 Coprinoids (Inky Caps)
A common contaminate mushroom often seen in bulk cultivations using manures, composts, straw or soils. The spores of many coprinoids are thermotolerant and can survive inadequate pasteurization. There are many species but the contaminating types are all fast growing and fragile with most dissolving into an inky liquid at maturity. The cap coloration can be white, brown or gray. The young caps are usually egg shaped, but mature into a bell or parasol shape before melting down. Spores are black. Not active, not edible (some species can be somewhat toxic, but none are considered deadly)
Could be a bad spore source ( which you should never mention in association with cultivation), but it could be improper pasteurization.
