Another crop lost
    #17326763 - 12/03/12 01:40 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I know it has happened to many others but this is my first time.  All my colonizing trays were hit by tric.

The probable cause was due to the trays being SO FULL to the top and the fact my foil that was covering them was making a lot of contact (including  the GE holes) to the actual substrate while it was colonizing.  Just a theory.

No need to ask for pics since I immediately removed them from the house & buried them in yard as soon as i saw tric spores.  I just needed to vent my frustrations.  :boo:

What was the substrate? And what method of pasteurization was used?

Horse manure/coir/verm/coffee/gypsum. I do a true pasteurization between 140-170 degrees F.

Spawned to bulk in trays. 1:1 spawn to sub ratio.

I do not own a flowhood but I always practice, what I'll call, above average sanitation & cleanliness.

This was also going to be my last MS grow since I got involved with agar.  And the fact this was a very slow growing ms spawn to begin with (which is also why I did a 1:1 ratio), that may be a contributor to today's contamination bonanza.

What did you use as spawn and how did you prepare that?

WBS.  24 hour soak (some weak coffee added).  No gypsum added this time.  Simmer/strain & dry.  Fill 2/3 full in quart jars. PC 90 min. @ 15psi.

Inoculated with a couple spore syringes that I was tired of looking at in the fridge.

At what point did they contaminate? Did they all contam at the same phase or time? Often the cause of contamination is carried from the spawn, so that's a strong possibility to consider. I recently lost about 90% of my work due to unseen trich. It likes to hide in a white disguise

Absolutely right. I've been thinking hard tonight about the color/patterns/ and just overall "look" of those jars of spawn I used.  Some of them may have had tric before it spored, and were hiding in the mycelium.

If that's the case then I must have screwed up while inoculating at some point.  I donno......this has never happened to me before, but it certainly seems like a contamination during inoculation.

All I know is, today sucked!

Did you get your syringe from a vendor or make it yourself?

For the life of me I couldn't remember much about the syringe.  Then late last night I was checking on some old jars that I've left colonizing and I found one jar that was part of this batch but just never made it to substrate........turns out these were NOT inoculated by any syringe!

I totally forgot that I had some bfr cakes that I birthed and cut into cubes, & then dropped into my grain jars.  I know the method works but is probably a lot more susceptible to contams, and I'm actually a little more relieved now knowing where things probably went wrong.
