Why is condensation bad in Agar
    #17326311 - 12/03/12 12:00 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

So I've been reading up on agar, and everyone's trying to fix excess condensation.

Why is that?

Seems to me a more humid environment would promote mycelium growth...

does it invite contams?

I've used search function to answer this to no avail...

reason I ask is I just finished my first pour and there is lots of condensation... I stacked em too.

i've found that my dishes that have more than average condensation either dont germinate (if from MS) or take MUCH longer.

my thoughts would be that colonizing mycelium on grains does not need a super humid environment (just needs hydrated grains etc) like a fruiting chamber, so why would colonizing mycelium on agar?

agars rich in nutrients

It should go away eventually once the agar completely cools. Condensation does not mean it's a more humid environment. It only means the inside of the dish is warmer than the outside.

Why is there a problem with excess condensation? not excess condescension!

If condensation drips down into the agar maedia it will form puddles of water on the agar surface . If you are iusolating myvelium and the mycelium gets soaked this can diminish or stopprebvent growth, also the water is really good for carying bacteria which would otherwise be on dot growing to growing over the entire surface of the petri dish , access water= BAD to put it in advanced mycological terms .
i jsut sort of invented an agsar pooring method that leaves no condensation but you HAVE to have a  trustworthy laminar flow hood . What you do ios this , in teh flowhood pour agar medfia into petri dishes and put the lids on top upside down, allow to cool , and then when they start to thicken put the lids on correctly and let them cool the rest of the way , there will be a lot of condensation on the top side of the lid and NONE inside the petri dish as all the condensation takes place before you flip teh lid around .

hey thanks lenny!

that's a good little trick there, kinda stealing the moisture right outa the plate!

so Wouldn't your original mix ratio of agar blend to water have something to do with your excess moisture content?

I just poured 10 plates, didn't use to top one with the most condensation, and cloned king oyster to 5 plates and shiitake to 4, pretty excited to see the results! I have a good feeling that the strains are going to do good work for me! (theyre from asian market, big beefy shiitakes and kings)

This is my first attempt at cloning to agar! wish me luck!
