Beans! and G2G question
#17324836 - 12/03/12 03:16 AM (12 years, 1 month ago) |

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried using pinto beans as a colonization method? I was about to make some re-fried beans and I thought about trying to throw then in a jar sterilize them and inject them with some spores. Anyone ever attempted this before? I've heard of people using beans as a part of a sub.
Now the second part of this is I just recently attempted my first g2g transfer. I got a nice rhizomorphic jar and I did the transfer in open air, I sterilized the room but, I hear a glove box is not necessary. It's been four days and the jars are showing huge signs of growth but in four of the jars there is a faint pink spot. I was wondering if that amount of speed in colonization is normal? I've heard that there is a form of mold that looks similar to mycelium but I am unsure what it is and if so what it is called. Also is it possible for the mycelium to eat the mold and the jar still be usable? I've had a jar where a discoloration has disappeared before and it seemed to me as if the mycelium ate the mold, is this possible? I can post pictures if anyone would need to see them to offer better advice.
thanks for anyone who read this or replied

I personally have never tried beans, nor do I think they would be the best choice. First they would probably get really mushy. Second legumes don't have much sugar in them that the mycelium would favor (mostly dietary fiber and protein).
For your second paragraph I would suggest posting a picture of what you are describing.

It is physically impossible to sterilize a room unless its a cleanroom, but i highly doubt everything in a clean room is sterile either.
Chemicals sanitize, heat sterilizes...Never inoculate anything in open air, and don't use a glovebox for this hobby...If you can't afford a Laminar Flow Hood then usa a SAB(Still Air Box).

The pink is probably a contam from the open air, and yes rapid colonization from a G2G transfer is normal. Pics would help.

Contams usually always win...trich always wins...

Me too. Depends on your work area. I used to be able to do open air G2G when it was just me and the wifey in the house. Add some kids and a dog to the mix and that turned into bad news. It can be done, but you need to create a really clean environment similar to a still air box with no drafts. Much easier to just use a GB.

i took extra precautions etc, but still recommend SAB than open air any day of the week

There's the pictures, I'm sure everyone notices right away where the discoloration is I'm talking about. Sometimes I think it might be grain matter in some and others it seems to be mold. I'll check if it spreads in a few days. I thought it looked like lipstick mold but, that type of mold is pretty aggressive and I haven't seen it spread visibly that much which makes me think it's grain matter. I'm still not sure.
thanks for taking the time to look/comment, all comments are appreciated.

What in the world makes you think that pink mould is grain matter? I see what looks to be the start of some bacteria as well.
I'd start over. Build a still air box and do it the right way next time.
As for using beans, I'd imagine getting moisture content correct could be a pain in the ass(similar to corn). They don't serve many inoculation points either when you spawn them to bulk. Wild bird seed is the king as far as inoculation points go.

I would at least let them finish and decide then, I must be one of the few that has seen what appears to be a victory of the mycelium over trich on a quart jar of Z cubes had a small spot of nasty looking trich in what looked like an otherwise great jar. At the advice of other shroomerites I seperated it from the herd and never birthed it to a tray or bulk sub but watched as it slowly seemed to defeat the spot of mold and eventually started pinning in jar ... I did pop the top of the jar once we started seeing pins and later a massive fruit forming, it gave up a 3.5gm (dried) monster fruit and after picking that we stuffed a ball of polyfill in the top to make it more like a bastard monotub and watched as it shot up fruits for quit a while longer but never picked anymore, beyond that it was mostly an experiment to see how gnar it would get...but that big fruit provided a nice time one night
So in the end, I wouldnt count on them surviving, but they might..either way separate the suspect ones and watch closely

I suppose he could fruit them in vitro, but using them for spawn would be asking for a waste of time and materials.

I do have a still air box, I was just being a lazy bastard and didn't want to deal with being in a cramped up space. I did separate them from the rest so will see what happens. I'll more than likely end up just tossing the jars in the trash though.
