Slingshots

Anyone else here a fan? I've had bean shooters since I was a wee tyke. Of course, I've upgraded from a wooden "toy" slingshot to a hunting grade apparatus since then. With the right slingshot and a well-placed round of ammo any small game can be an easy kill. I have a marksman, it only cost $20.00, but with an upgraded band It's a killer.
 The slingshot
 The bands I order

a sling shot is a very good survivalist tool IMO
not only so you have unlimited ammo in the form of rocks for small game, but with very easy and simple mods you can turn your slingshot into a sling BOW that shoots arrows almost as hard a a bow.

Yeah that's a really fun thing to do I need to build myself a target that will withstand arrows without damaging them.

My great grandpa was deadly with a slingshot. A slingshot and a good beagle was all he needed for a weekend of rabbit hunting. Now I kinda wanna start practicing with a slingshot . . .

I have recently taken up slinging. Not with a slingshot, but with like a shepherd's sling. I have had an insane a mount of fun doing it. You just can't beat pulling a sling out of your back pocket, picking up a few rocks and being ready to hurl anyplace, anytime. My only real issue is how absurdly difficult it is to hit anything even remotely small.
So here is my question...how difficult is it to become fairly proficient with a sling shot like the one in your picture compared to something like archery? less difficult? more difficult? about the same? Any special considerations I should make before investing in a slingshot?

I think it's easier than a bow at shorter ranges. The hardest part comes one you start putting your own bands on and making the ends flush so it shoots straight. If it's strung right it can be pretty deadly.

Archery is not very difficult, its kind of like riding a bike, kind of hard at first, but easy once you get the hang of it. Once you practice a bit you can instinctively know where the arrow will hit... muscle memory.
If you know how to make bows from scratch out the bush you could have a pretty good hunting tool, no rubber needed.
dont break your rubber out there or youll be in trouble
I like those shepard's sling things, its a very simple to make idea that could work in the bush if all else fails. I imagine it would be easier to use bigger rocks rather than small ones.

Very true! I grew up bow hunting and even taught a few people to do the same. I took an approx 6 year hiatus during which I never shot a bow. One day a year or so back some guys were practicing with a bow and I decided to give it a go, although I told them I would most likely suck terribly. Long story short...I still had the skillz

Yeah, I find that half dollar sized rocks work the best for me, although most everyone tells me to go a tad smaller. Having that much momentum probably makes it easier given my questionable skills.

Only $10 on amazon right now! (+8 shipping >.< ) I think ima get one. What kind of bands are those you use? I have some slingshot bands I carry in my survival kit for making a makeshift slingshot when needed, but I think I'm gonna get a couple real ones.

I must say GuruBushHippie I like your style, your posts are constantly right up my alley!
Coyotes came in real close tonight and was thinking I wish I had someone to spotlight for me. Fairly confidant I could immobilize a coyote with one for how close in they got and sling shot or something else silent is my only option as I live in the city limits with a ton of houses on the other side of me. Whats the difference in the upgraded bands you use? Cost?

Thanks! There actually are specialty slingshots that people custom build to launch musket balls at deadly speeds, but you'd be hard pressed to find one of those contraptions. The bands I use pull with more tension than the standard ones. They don't cost much though, they range from 3-10 bucks or more depending on styles. There's some crazy stuff out there.

Is this what you're looking for? http://www.catsdomain.com/
I love slingshots and used to hunt pigeons with them at my grandparents farm. We'd make soup out of them.

I'm seriously thinking of picking one up. We have a lot of Turkeys where I hike.
btw how do you like that Marksman? Have you had many others to compare it to?

I've owned quite an array of styles in the past. Everything from old school wooden ones to cutting edge models that use your thumb and index finger as the yoke of the slingshot. I like that particular marksman (and similar styles) because of the forearm brace. Anyone using a hunting grade band on a slingshot with no arm brace and still keeping his aim steady then he's a hauss. The brace makes for more consistent shots when practicing and which translates to well-placed shots when taking down small game.
I would also advise against shooting a turkey with a slingshot unless you're very proficient. Anything but a headshot is just gonna send it coming after you and they can be mean as fuck, especially in the wild.

I've shot arrows out of mine using the ghetto keyring method, but I totally forgot that slingbows were still being developed. I have a few whisker biscuits lying around my workshop as we speak along with some zip ties, some golf tees, and some epoxy. It looks like I found my adderall project for the day. I will definitely report back.
