To add the casing layer at first or not?
    #1724186 - 07/17/03 07:05 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I have seen casing being done where they prepare the substrate and crumble the contents of the jar and mix, then throw back into incubating chamber after which it has colonized they then apply there top casing layer.

Can you apply the casing layer with the substrate before you incubate? or should you wait till the substrate is colonized again then apply the casing layer?

Thank the Mushroom Goddess!!!!!

A friend was worried, he has another that he was gonna try it without the casing layer to see. (then of course apply the casing layer after incubation)

It's only one quart jar pretty much half full and colonized, is gonna try a little bit of poo with some straw like the other casing.

Yea, my friend bozo just lays the trays, evens it out, adds the casing, and sticks in the terrarium. Never needed to incubate. Always gets good results.
Everytime he tried incubation, it always overlayed.
But then again, he just a stupid clown

I guess the difference would be if you are using your jar(s) for spawn or as the total substrate. It seems to me that in most cases if you are just crumbling the cake or WBS, or whatever, then you case first. If you are spawning poo or straw you case after the newly spawned substrate is colonized. Does this sound correct generally?

Yea your right, forgot to mention that. You need to let your poo/straw incubate and colonize before casing.

what if a person were to case partly through incubation  ..  lets say . ..  3 days into it?  will this be ok?  i would think it would shorten the time needed . . . because the casing can colonize while the substrate is finishing off.  just ideas from dreams.... any feedback is much appreciated.  thanks
