Pretty sure my grow is screwed.
    #17313709 - 12/01/12 08:38 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Ive got 5 monos and a GH worth of stuff to put in there and it all seems to have stalled , i see very little metabolites been working on keeping GE good.
I used coir and verm as my Bulk substrate would this be a bad idea with a lower spawn ratio?
any ideas?

well lower spawn ratio's are always(usually) a bad idea.
ideal is 1:2 ; 1:3 is ok too.
but just give it time = )
how long has it been?

Did you smell every jar before spawning it?
When I've had entire projects go bad, it's usually because my initial LC / syringe was bad and I didn't know it.

from 1-3 weeks maybe 4
Luckily the lowest ratio is 1:3
I want to start using 1:1
I used MS and none of my spawn jars had any problems.
I always keep control jars and control jars for my coir and spawn have been fine and as far i can see my inoculate from sporeworks is amazing and contam free, i did get trich in one tupperware thing with an 1/4in open hole on the lid, the trich was on top so i think it came through the top

Did you smell each and every jar before spawning?
Because a common mistake is to think that all contams will manifest visually in jars. In truth, they don't. But they all have a distinct smell that is very different than what a clean jar of cube mycelium smells like.

Just for reference, I usually toss about 20 jars out of every 250 that look beautiful on the surface, but for whatever reason, do not smell right.  Sometimes the difference is very subtle too. If it's sweet smelling, it's gone. Earthy, gone. Sour, gone.

You want only the smell of fresh mushrooms.

If you do this AND pasteurize properly, you can be assured you're doing all you can to prevent contams.

Trich is a mean bitch.
I had to toss one recently too.
Seems I need to do a full two hour pasteurization for substrates with coffee...man, fuck coffee.

Your substrate is probably too dry. Using a lower spawn ratio will not cause stalling, it will still grow at a steady rate but take slightly longer. If your growth just slowly tapers off it's probably from a lack of moisture.

The air is quite dry this time of year because of falling temps in my region.

Might affect his GH trays but not the monos...
My RH is usually 20% or less all winter but my monos never have any trouble.

Yeah but what if your monotub is too dry to begin with?

I've had some issues only using substrates that didn't contain any coir. That stuff holds moisture so well, I now mix it with my manure.

I'm going to say this going to be an epic fail if you try
I take your lack of response to mean you didn't smell your spawn jars. I'll leave this here for you, because it's very very important that you remember this from now on

I shake it to break everything up really good, open the jar lid, and give it a good smell before dumping it into the tub.
You can smell before too, but it's definitely the smell after you break it up and open the lid that will tell you right from wrong.

I hope it picks back up for you.
If it does end up going south, just remember to start small next time. I had a couple epic heartbreaks as well when I was getting started...I lost 14 monotubs to a trich infested LC syringe that went bad after I had shot a test PF cake :frown:

It looks wispy in areas but I've fruited tubs with wispy myc and gotten flushes.
I still say it looks like you have a bacteria/incoming mold problem but it's colonized enough to fruit.

Second and fourth one look funky.
Can you snap a pic without the shaking?
Brace your camera on the lip of the tub and then take the picture.
They are certainly being slow if they aren't colonized after 3-4 weeks.

Define funky? I thought all my first blocks smelled funky cause i wasn't used to the mushroom smell. Bacteria usually causes fruity smells.

It's hit or miss every time.
Some people get away with it.
Some people don't.
I would pasteurize properly in the future.
It's super simple once you do it a couple times.

Sweaty sock smell sounds like bacteria for sure.

You don't need either.
Read my teks on pasteurizing in jars.
And a SAB  has advantages over a flowhood in some respects, for small grows.

RR's manure prep shows proper pasteurizing:
http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Horse-Manure-Substrate

I properly pasteurize every substrate, whether coir and verm or more.  I don't ever fuck with hit or miss things anymore.

idk, just does, try it if you please, but youll waste your time, ive had jars that spiked up to 180 give or take, while sealed up they circumed to spiderweb, and trich, its like the extra heat kills off everything, and leaves a blank pallet for anything and everything to take over, cube myc is alsready slow to start.....

if you leave out the manure, and just do straight coir and verm and maybe some gypsum if you please, its alot more forgiving, the manure will give you problems

No, don't sterilize your substrate ever.
0% success rate as far as that goes with bulk.
Just properly pasteurize next time, you're overthinking this :crazy2:
