How do you drill 3/8 or 1/2 inch holes on lids?
    #17311408 - 11/30/12 07:58 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I gather you start with a smaller and work on up?  Just wondering if there's a methodical way.  I started with 1/8.  Not cutting it.  Anyway to make this a 3 part drill process or less?

But a forstner bit.  It's much easier to use on metal than normal bits and leaves clean edges.

I always put a block of wood underneath the lid and just press firmly against the drill (if that's not obvious.)

You can drill the hole ANY way that's convenient for you.

I personally drill a small pilot hole through several lids stacked on top of each other then I drill them out using the appropriate size drill bit.

You can drill them using regular drill bits, forstner bit or even a step drill bit (1/4" to be specific for MY grain jars). There's more than one way to skin a cat and no ONE right way to do it ... as long as you get the hole you've scored

After reading some threads on polyfil a lot say 1/4.  Is 3/8 too big?

Ok...and on stuffing these holes.  How far through the lid should I pull?  And how much above the top?  How dense?  I'm kinda confused at how to stuff proper as this shit is not so uniform

I usually make like a 3" peice and fold it and pull it thru...tight...not so tight where a needle cant poke thru, but not so loose as to where a needle would dislodge it...then i cut off the access leaving only a marble sized peice on either end.  this is hard to put into words...lol...

I was having a hell of time with 1/2" holes. The metal kept tearing and it looked like shit. Was more of an oval than a hole. Then I went and bought a forstner bit. Best bit I've ever used on lids.

You cut off the excess on both ends or only the end opposite from where you pulled through?

You don't want much excess inside the jar or it can get wet when you shake.  Using polyfill as a lid filter is demonstrated in the 5 steps to grain prep video.

Go and get your self a unibit
http://m.homedepot.com/s/unibit/
Drill down to your size and then flip the lid and run over lightly to remove burrs.
Supper fast and easy
