Not quite cobweb, not quite myc, help!
    #17309096 - 11/30/12 01:25 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

So I did the whole dunk and roll, a mass of white snow like looking stuff appeared within about 2 days and it looked like aerial myc but i was not sure so i in a ocd like manner scraped it off the cake, and where i scraped after days of just leaving it alone not fanning nothing little knot like balls of what looks like cotton started showing up and it is defintely white as snow yet again, it might look grey in the pictures but when it fills in it is a dense white, im not sure what it is, and i cant really tell if it smells like mushrooms or mold i had moldy weed with cobweb on it before and it smelled like sour catpiss, this smells like sour perlite type of smell obviously, mixed with mushrooms honestly but its my first grow so i am not sure.

should i just wait and see what happens or throw it away and start fresh, thanks for any help.

If it smells sour theres probably something bacterial going on. RR once said that contaminated substrate doesn't necessarily mean contaminated mushrooms. I'd say its fine. Continue misting and fanning until you get pinning.

since its growing pretty fast my best guess is that its cobweb as you suspect. i think the lack of fresh clean air might have caused it

i was fanning in the beginning so there was plenty of fresh air around the clock, and it is actually not growing that fast, i would say it took about 5 days from when i scraped it for this new growth to really present its self.

If it was cobweb that would have taken a day or two, not five.

alright, i guess ill just assume its not mold then, it just doesnt look like any pictures on here of healthy myc, and i have another jar colonizing and the myc looks much more similar to pics i see on here, i did use different syringes though maybe that has something to do with the differences.

what is a good way to keep the fruiting chamber humid, i have moisture on the sides but barely, it isn't visible, temperature stays around 65-70 perlite stays pretty moist, but not enough humidity in my newb opinion.

Curious what was the point of scraping?  In my opinion you're just asking for a contam by scrapping at your cake. If its cobweb take some h2o2 (hydrogen peroxide 2-3% mixed with water) and it will basically melt away from the q tip or if you mist it it should basically disappear.

My opinion it looks like myc. Just make sure you give it more fresh air and let it do its thing.

man like i said, moment of ocd, i have no idea why i scraped it... i let the idea that it was cobweb just overtake my mind,i thought mushrooms would grow out of the verm layer i didnt expect this kind of growth, like i said...first grow lol.  i really think i should have more humidity though...

What is your humidity at? The myc will grow a little through the verm layer then start to pin. Closest thing that would grow like that I think would be trich but its more solid looking then fuzzy so to speak.

If you dunked and rolled and then have a good amount of perlite I wouldn't be too concerned about them drying out. Pick one up, if its light then they're drying out if not they're fine.

8 bucks isn't much for a cigar shop humidifier =P

It looks contaminated to me. Also, your cakes should not be sitting directly on the perlite because they can become waterlogged which would hurt production.

There should be some bruising if you scraped it and it was mushroom mycelium.

Contamination doesn't grow fast by default.

there is no bruising, but instead of white underneath the verm layer i see brown, as if its just rotting or something but in one area the cake is very white like it was when i dunked and rolled, and its growing something and i just noticed that growth got much larger today, so i snapped some pics of it wondering if any one could tell me what it is.

The white strands are rhizomorphic mycelium as EG stated but that whispy stuff might be cobweb mold. Can't tell from the pic though. Put a little peroxide on a q tip and touch the whispy stuff. If it starts disintegrating then its cobweb, if it does pretty much nothing then its myc and I'm sorry for making you hurt it =P
