Pre 100% Colonization Pins on Cakes...But I want to Case
    #17308148 - 11/30/12 10:30 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

So I've had this problem before when doing the PF Tek and birthing to cakes. However, this time around I was originally planning on birthing the cakes, crumbling them up in a plastic bag, then using coco coir as my sub as I use the cakes as spawn for casing.

I know the usual wait till 100% then another 7 days is not applicable for casings. So should I go ahead and wait till 100% and let the pins grow invitro? Or would it be best to cut away (With a sterilize knife) the small uncolonized part and then case?

P.s the cakes are like 90-95% and will be on their 4th week sunday.

Well, unless anyone speaks up I am going to plan on casing these today. I don't want these invitro pins to gobble up all the food for the fruits for the casing.

I'll probably just scrape off/cut any uncolonized sub with a sterilized knife. Place the cakes in a plastic bag and break them up until they are penny sized. Then I'll follow the Let's Grow video on casing, though I'll only be using verm/coco coir...

I have horse manure/wood chip sub but I don't know if I should use it..(no pc).

After that I suppose it's just following instructions. sub layer--->spawn---->casing layer---->lid with GE holes----->Wait until 100% colonized and mycellium has broken through the casing layer all around----->induce fruiting conditions in my SGFC.

That is not casing, you use coir for your substrate, its got nutrients in it, a casing has no nutrients in it and you really dont need a casing layer for cubes.
Better watch that video again.

I am using coir as my sub...

I researched it a little further. Your sub is not what you would use in a casing layer?

Also I found a quote from RR

Thanks. That still doesn't answer the original post though. How many cakes per case 9x11? and how thick should my casing layer be? (bottom and top?) I read somewhere that the bottom should be 1/2" and the top layer should be upwards of 1". Is that correct?

Nobody knows what you're asking.

You need to read up on terminology.  The word 'case' is a verb which means "to apply a casing layer' over a bulk substrate.  It isn't a word for the container you place your bulk substrate and spawn into.

In addition, cubensis benefits little from a casing layer, and brf cakes are already 2/3 vermiculite as it is.  Fruit cakes as cakes, or if you want to grow bulk, break them up and mix with pasteurized horse manure at a rate of 1 part cake to 3 parts manure.  Fruit it uncased.
RR

So I suppose I mix it with horse manure then? So does this mean I just leave the spawn completely uncovered on top? Or simply mixed in with the sub? I suppose I could do a co-coir/horse manure/verm sub..

Edit: I am following this tek -------------> http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14995972/fpart/1/vc/1

No your substrate is what you mix your spawn (BRF Cakes, Grains) into that your mushrooms are going to grow out of. A casing layer is a non nutrient layer that you would put on top of your substrate, but in this case, you dont need to do that.
If you want to grow "bulk" with these cakes, do what RR suggested or maybe make a mix of coffee and coir as your substrate and put that into a mono tub or shotgun fruiting chamber (SGFC).

You might not want to use the aluminum trays as mycelium likes to eat them up.

This is the tek I'll be following. He has it pretty laid out here. I just got confused with what he said, instead of 3 layers it wally really just 2. That's not really the main concern of this thread though...do you have any suggestions for that?

I have invitro pins in my Dancing Tiger jars. This sunday will be their 4th week birthday from inoculation. They are all at least 90% colonized but are pinning quite a bit. Would it be better for me to birth now, cut any uncolonized sub with a sterilize knife, pick the pins, and then case? Or wait until it's 100% colonized before casing (not waiting an extra week) and let the pins grow invitro..

Im not 100% on that because I have never had this happen... I would think to let them reach 100% and then give them another week but like I said, its never happened to me before.

BRF jars can be used as spawn if they're fully colonized.  You don't need to wait a week, as is recommended if you're fruiting it as a cake.  Crumble your cake and mix it with twice as much pasteurized manure or coir.
RR

I am leaning towards going ahead and birthing because of this statement(Then again he says 'if they're fully colonized"  :cruelworld: . If it's not needed to consolidate..then all I am waiting on is a small patch of verm/brf..

Thanks for your help!
