Bulk Substrate: The more I read the less I understand.
    #17307885 - 11/30/12 09:12 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

After sifting through teks and recipes for days, this is what I do and don't get.

1. Rye/wbs etc. are inoculated and grow myc.

2. That myc. covered grain is called a substrate. (Or is the prepped seed itself called a substrate?  Is that myc covered seed/grain called spawn or substrate?)

3. I can to a g2g transfer to grow more or I can use that for growing at that time.

4. In order to best use the col. grain (spawn?) I cover it in a nutrient rich moist environment (dung or dung and straw).  I can do that in layers... dung, grain, dung, grain, dung (on top) OR I can mix the grain into the dung and leave it like that (no myc exposed on top).

5.  Then I put plastic wrap over the dung/grain and put it away in a warm humid place for about 10 days to let the spawn colonize the whole thing (or almost the whole thing.)  The plastic wrap should touch the top of the dung heap. (I shouldn't even look at it for 10 days.)

6.  When it is mostly colonized I then case it using the 50/50 recipe drop the temp. and hope for pins. (Still covered in plastic.)

7.  When I see pins I put it in the FC, wait, watch harvest.

In addition to my questions in the 7 steps I listed...

I don't know if there should be holes in the plastic for GE.
I don't know if that warm humid place should be in an a closed up tub.
I don't know if the tub or plastic should be opened for FAE.
I don't know if I need to move the col. substrate out of the tub to find a place to lower the temp.

As I mentioned, I have read and read until my eyes are red and I'm brain dead.  (no rhyme intended)

If you can tell me where I've messed up, I would be forever in your debt.

Best thing to do would be to forget all that you've read and start over here, RR's pages are the go-to source for info:

Yes, you can bump my old threads with a question.

substrate is anything that we intend mycelium to colonize.

rye is a substrate, but more specifically it is our "spawn"

because you will be spawning that rye to a bulk substrate (coir, dung, straw, whatever)

but basically you just want to follow the coir bucket tek.

link is in my sig.

I'm only trying to grow a few small trays using a pint of spawn at a time.  I don't need to make a giant bucket of bulk substrate.  Is there a way to make a smaller amount.  I'm assuming I can't store it after I prepare it.  Right?

I think I'm more clear, the substrate is WHATEVER you use to grow myc on.

and then you add on the specifying words like "bulk" substrate.

you could call it spawn substrate if you wanted.

but many people just say spawn and bulk. both of which are substrates.

cakes are another substrate we use.

as for not doing the full bucket tek.

you could make the full recipe and only use a little of it.

but after your initial mixup of the recipe. any use of the coir AFTER must be properly pasteurized.

I know RR is super smart and the most respected person on this site.  I just can't believe with all the information provided I can't get a little clarity.  Not to mention, all that I've already spent I can't justify another $50. for a video.  I can support the site financially, if I can someday grow more than 5g.  At this point I have to impose a spending freeze on my project or I may be looking at divorce court.

clarity is here, i guess maybe it seems hard to find.

you can PM me or anyone in the AMU for a little 1 on 1 time.

or we have a Q&A thread setup for you to hit us up with questions.

check my sig. or pm me

Mostly correct.

Here's where you start to get a little bit off...

Since you have the beginning down, you can safely get started.  RR's videos can be downloaded for $9.  There's a lot of really good info in these forums, but there's also a lot of outdated and bad info mixed in, and it can be hard to differentiate when you're starting out.  Download his videos and you'll have an easy reference for lots of good info.
