Coarse vs fine verm? There just doesn't seem to be a solid answer.

Granted there are a lot of old threads debating this topic. However it's basically split down the middle with people opting for fine, and those opting for coarse for a number of different reasons. Just curious on a fresh take from some of you and your reasons why. I'm more talking for using in substrate but curious for brf as well.

They both work. My reason why is because I've tried both For cakes, I just follow the PF tek recipe.
If I'm using fine grade verm, I add an extra quart of it to my bulk substrates.

IMO, finer verm will have a more even layer if used for casing? ANd coarse verm maybe better for substrates like coir to give some space for air to flow through the sub. Coarse verm is very porous and has gaps in between the piece of verm unlike fine verm That's my opinion.

You mean an extra separate quart of fine separate from the rest being coarse?

No no Sorry, poor grammar skills so early in the morning. I prefer medium-grade or coarse. But if I use fine grade, I always add an extra quart of it to my bulk substrates.

fine verm will hold more water per volume.

For cakes, fine.
For bulk, RR said not to use course, but didn't address whether fine or medium is better. I use 1/2 fine and 1/2 course. Mostly because A long time ago, I was growing with a friend and I sent him out to get fine and came back with a huge ass bag of course, and I'm still using it.

I always use coarse in my brf cakes and use fin to top them off for that barrier. This is the best way to go because using coarse on top allows more contams to get through the layer. And coarse inside the cake allows bigger water hold and airflow. For casing I use coarse again for air flow.

The verm I use is weird, it's the most commonly available brand in my country, but inside the bag the verm runs the gamut from sand to gravel-sized chunks.
