Contaminated Jar
    #17307318 - 11/30/12 05:41 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Is my jar contaminated? It hasn't shown any change on this patch in 2 weeks (10-12 days I believe). I am guessing it is a bacterial contaminate but I am not as knowledgable as you folks.

Also is this jar unusable for anything if it is bacteria? Or could I take a grain and plop it on agar later on down the line?

Cheers for looking

i dont see any bacteria. i would take a pumped up bike tire and break up those grains let the mycillum grow %100 after that.

Im seeing what could be wet rot in these pics..... look at the creamy looking liquid around the uncolonized grains.
Here is a good thread for seeing what good and bad look like.

I believe so creekfreek. Would a shake do nothing beneficial for the mycelium to win the fight then?

Am I better off dumping the jar and sterilizing it in a PC?

A shake is going to weaken your myc and the bacteria will flourish.
Just shake it, open it, dump it, then wash with warm soapy water. You'll be PC'ing it when it's filled with your next batch of grains anyhow

Yeah just dump that shit and try again... Its happened to me many times, I follow the WBS teks and I still wind up with some jars like this.

+1 to contaminates.

The myc seemed to do well with the rest of the jar, so no reason this patch should go unconquered, lest it be conquered already by bacteria of some sort.

Break up and dumpster tek.

Cheers guys. I will dump and reuse it.

I didn't heat the water during the soaking of the grains before leaving it overnight to soak. I used cold tap water instead so that may have been a factor if the endospores need warm water during the soak to germinate.

That shouldn't matter, endospores are killed at temperatures and pressures reached during proper pressure cooking, there is no need for them to germinate.

Oh I thought I read that the soak was to germinate temperature resistant endospores before frying them in the presure cookers heat. So soaking is to only hydrate the grains as all common endospores aren't resistant to the temperatures of a 15 PSI pressure cook for ~90 minutes?
