I am never hunting in the woods again!
    #1730222 - 07/19/03 02:07 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

It rained like a motherfucker 2 days ago, so this morning I decided to venture into the woods near my house to see if I could find any interesting mushrooms (no actives grow in the woods in my area though). Anyway, the amount of mosquitos and other bugs drove me crazy! I would push aside a plant to reach for mushrooms, and a swarm of tiny bugs would fly up and then dance around my head. The fuckers even followed me as I walked away!

I also hated it when a branch or leaves or plants would brush against my hair or arms. I guess I'm not a woodsey person. When I go camping, I somehow don't mind it, because the campsite is not as narrow and claustrophobic as the pathways in the woods, and things don't keep brushing against me as I walk. I just imagine all sorts of bugs crawling on me when that happens.

So from now on I will limit myself to open areas like parks and pastures. Sheesh!

LOL

Yeah, I guess if you're not a woodsy person then hunting in the woods isn't really for you.

Of course, pretty much all habitats produce mushrooms, so try the pastures and fields. Even urban areas produce some interesting mushrooms.

Happy mushrooming!

one year the mosquitoes were really bad here. I was hunting mushrooms in my usual stomping grounds, when a swarm of what must have been 100+ came after me. I had to run the equivalent of a city block (the long way) to shake them... bastards. Do you have stagnant water in your woods? That's where their larvae live...

I hear ya man... Those god damned mosquitos bother the hell out of me.
I just went in my backyard for 5 minutes to check for Chanterelles and I constantly had mosquitos buzzing in my ears. It's pointless to venture into the woods in Georgia without bugspray on or you'll be attacked.

Bugspray works wonders I hear. Deep woods off, 100% deet and you'll never see a bug land on you, not even once. Comes in a little bottle with a pump spray.

I love hiking around in the forests here, you just have to be careful of bears.

Hells yeah. I use REPEL 100 which is 98% deet. It kicks ass, you have an anti-bug aura around you.

What!?

The woods are terrible. They do not connect us with our true beings, they are a haven for demonic creatures which attack and drink your blood.

I think we should get rid of all forests so we have more things like houses and wooden chopsticks.

The forests are evil, and lastly, mushrooms dont like the forest either, cuase they get eaten by maggots. Its best to look for them in my bathroom floor.

Oh yeah Gumbydude! I hate it when they go by my ears, in my eyes, or up my nose. To anyone who's ever searched for libcaps or other mushroom in pastures, I'd like to ask you if the cow patties attract a lot of bugs, and if I should wear bugspray if I do decide to go hunting in poo fields :-)

Just be glad you don't have mosquitoes as big as the ones are where I hunt.
Last time I was out in the woods, I saw a "skeeter" swoop down, screw a  wood duck, kill it, and then fly off with it.
I've seen'em do a double shot of DEET,snort a line of Sevin dust, smoke a bowl of malathion, and the bastards are still able to drive home.
Now that's some bad-ass mosquitoes

man the other day the gnats were going at my eyes like nobody's business. It seems like the damselflies are swarming too. they're pretty big and swarm by the tens of thousands here now and then, seriously like a blizzard of dying damselflies covering the town. It's not so bad yet, but they were all up in my face, yuck.

Three words:  Deep Woods Off.  Also, smoking while you're hunting can help -- and getting a $2 mosquito net from WalMart can be great, too.  (Though rather hard to smoke with. )

Yeah, if we don't have bugspray we'll just keep a cigarette lit at all times. Those bugs hate the smell of menthols.
