wild chinchillas
    #17301284 - 11/29/12 03:08 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

this video shows what wild chinchillas look like. i'm not sure which species these are, probably costina. i used to breed chinchillas and have never seen any with stripes on their backs. i always thought the natural color was supposed to be the common grey, but these are a reddish brown beige color that is nothing like the mutation colors in breeding programs, but their color is exactly the color of the rocks they live amongst. i'm sure there's noone else here interested in chinchilla genetics, but this just astounds me that true natural selection is such a completely different game than breeding in captivity. i know that the common chinchilla herds today are a cross of the lanigera and costina mostly, with some brevicaulda in there, but this color and the stripe have never been seen in captivity. chinchillas are considered the highest eveolved rodent on the planet. they still eat their own poop and anally rape each other though.

Maybe it has to do with the habitat?  In the video they seem to match the surroundings well.

that's what i'm saying, but if you ever studied chinchillas, you'd know hat these traits have never been expressed in captivity, almost like some genetic sequence with their habitat was switched off. you would think that we'd be able to breed for those traits, but they never show up.
