Good idea for the states,
but where I live plexi costs an arm and a leg!
Did think of cutting up PVC tubing but that would be labour intensive.
That's a great article Sparkle, Thanks, will try with spent oyster sub.

Sparkle, I have been working with blazei (same strain you have) via space from a good friend who buys spawn from me. We did 4 large mason bins of straw with 10% spawn. After 4 weeks from inoculation we cased today. The bins have 1 inch of perlite in the bottom and drainage holes. Pasteurized straw was filled to one inch from the top and today a mound of peat on top. We put the bins on the top shelves in one of the grow rooms where it is warmest. They are in the upper right of the first pic.
The whole grow room smells like almond!

Just straw? It wasn't composted? Just starting with this one. I have a bit on grain and some new plates coming up and some compost brewing.

Great work bro.
Amazing stuff....so much for the mandatory live compost theory.
Thank you for sharing.

Great lipa, the ABM3 strain has colonized the agar in a week. #5 is not doing anything. The lion's mane is fruiting loads on agar. Keep us posted. Mine will be a while yet. Am putting it into mother grain now.

Lipa any updates on the straw bins? How was yield? I have spawn going atm and would love to use straw if it is viable. Anyone else have updates?

Here's ABM trying to fruit right in the unopened bag with no casing.

Bag is 80% sawdust, 20% Sunflower seeds (still in the hulls)- autoclaved 2 hours- inoculated with grain spawn on 9/17/2012. Photo is today.

And here is this evenings photo- I think this belongs in that old fruiting ABM blocks thread.

Weighed in at 142 grams. Development ended up being a lot more normal than I would have expected.

After dinner tonight I'm going to riff off of an apricot cherry almond cobbler recipe and do a dessert featuring ABM for almond flavoring. I'll let you know how it turns out.
*update* ABM is a convincing and delicious substitute for almonds in baked desserts.

I'm going to case the block when I get a chance- theres one more inoculated the same day with the same recipe that has some big hyphal knots and I'm having a hard time deciding whether to let them out, case them, or leave them alone to see if they get huge as well.
I got the strain from a friend of mine named Chainsaw. And thats a true story. I have an inclination that he originally got the spawn from Field and Forest but I don't know its story very well.
