Pans- dung or straw?
    #17296496 - 11/28/12 11:42 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

About ready to make up some substrate for my pan cyans and I was wondering, is it better to have a substrate that is mostly straw or mostly hpoo?
I've seen great results from both by searching, but was wondering if anyone had any personal experience to share.
:thanx:

I just spawned 8 trays of pan cyan. Every tray has a different mix because I too was unsure on what would be best.

So unless someone with concrete experience chimes in and says otherwise, I would go with a few different mixes to try it out.

#1. 20% coir, 20% hpoo, 15% rpoo, 15% straw, 15% verm, 10% cotton seed, 5% chicken poo)
(My usual cube mix)
#2. 100% hpoo
#3. 100% straw
#4. 50/50 hpoo/verm
#5. 50/50 rabbit poo/verm
#6. 50/50 hpoo/straw
#7. 33/33/33 rabbit poo/verm/straw
#8. 33/33/33 hpoo/verm/straw
Of course all were topped off with gypsum

With panaeolus nothing will give better results than straight horse or cow dung. Gypsum added.

Pasteurized. Not sterile.

As much FAE as possible and limit the misting to 0 after pinning.

I figured but I've recently found some killer pan grows on straw and dung (90/10) with gypsum, like this one:

true that, ive had jars with hpoo in the mix contam while seaeled up that got to hot and reachead sterlization temps , straight coir/verm/gypsum is alot more forgiving lol

That picture is a perfect example. Before going with straight hpoo I tried all sorts of mixtures between verm dung straw. The test tray I made with 100% straw looked close to the above picture, the fruits matured extremely small with stems resembling a strand of hair. The more hpoo I used the bigger the fruits got (especially the stems) and the more consistently they flushed. Plus dung is more resistant to contam than any other substrate.

I had mixed results adding verm to hpoo, even with an isolate. Still haven't figured that one out.

I got a question along these lines I spawned Pan Cam rye to straw verm 3 days ago in a substrate bag. now in a couple days it should be fully colonized now I have to put into a pan. How deep should the substrate be I heard somewhere with straight straw you need a deeper depth  than 2". Could this be the reason for the thin stems.

Less available moisture causes small fruiting bodies in all species of mushroom. One thing straw is not so good at is holding good quantities of water when compared to dung. But if your straw has a good amount of verm a more shallow substrate will work fine since verm holds water so effectively. Deep substrates are almost never necessary with panaeolus. 2" is more than enough.

Pans are tough but just a little picky. Give them the pinning environment they want or they give you nothing. No mercy.

I wouldn't recommend fruiting them in anything but a GH with cool mist. No other chambers give quite enough FAE. Even in an SGFC they get skinny and the pins abort like crazy.

I had a big pan cyan tray get completely engulfed in cobweb mold.  Gave it one h202 spray then sat on my desk in open air for 36 hours the dry fresh air wiped out the cobweb. I rehydrated the cake put it in GH and it was covered in pins after 2 days. Point is pans can handle long periods of drought (cobweb cannot) and other stress but soon as they get what they want they explode.

I've been picking them in the wild for 11 years the strain I grow is from my town in FL. If anyone needs a print message me. I don't think any vendors sell the FL var.

Damn, I wish I had another room for my GH. My monos are taking up my entire grow room at the moment
Might have to make due with the SGFC for this round, then bust out the GH when I can make some space and knock up some grains with a different isolate.

Well if your home often enough just fan as much as possible. Or point a fan at or near the sgfc. Not directly of course just a very light breeze.
