Color of wbs after cooking...
    #1729642 - 07/19/03 07:09 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I pc'ed 3 one liter jars of finch seed a few days ago. They were soaked for 20 hours then drained well. After pressure cooking for 1 hour 10 minutes, and cooling overnight. I took a look at them. The seed had turned brown in places. It looks like the wettest kernels turned brown and the lighter ones stayed tan. I innoculated them. Then I came back and took a peek yesterday. The bottom third of the jar was all stuck together and brown and the top 2/3rds were looses and tan. So I shook the hell out of two of them. Still no coonization after 3 days. Is that the color of cooked birdseed? Is everything normal there.

Nothing after three days is normal. Brown and stuck together, like maybe a bacteria contam? A pic would help.

How long did you drain the seed after soaking? Did you shake before inoc?

No I don't think it's contamination cuz that's what it looked like when it came out of the pc. I didn't shake before innoc. It looks more like the water in the jars seeped down. Making the bottom of the jar more dense and compressed. I shook two of the three yesterday, it kinda mixed better. I guess my new question is this. Did the grain on top dry out in the pc. I only cooked for 70 minutes at 15psi. It doesn't neccesarily look dry just not as wet as the bottom. Has anybody ever seen this with finch seed before. Is it normal for moisture to sink to the bottom of the jar. What should I do to promote colonization?

Yes.

My friend gives his birdseed jars a good shake immediatley after PC'ing, while the jars are still hot. This helps distribute the moisture evenly.

What effect has your friend seen from not shaking immedietly after pc'ing? Is the shaking I gave them after 3 days sufficent to resolve the problem? Did your friend witness any lasting detriment from not shaking immedietly?

I still can't tell if the grain on top is dry or not. I can't imagine it being so after 20 hours of soaking. However in comparison to the bottom grain it seems so much more dry than them. I only innoculated about an inch or 1/2 down. Not into the really moist area. Will this be ok?

give them a week
don't look, touch,or even think about them
after a week if you have mycelium growth flip the jars and check in another week
DON"T shake them any more as this can damage the mycelium and then they will take forever if they finish at all

Exactly what you are describing... wetter grain at the bottom with the top looking dry.

Kramer is right. Shaking or otherwise fucking with your jars too much will hinder growth. Give them a shake immediately after PC'ing, a shake just after inoculation and one last time at about 25% colonization. Other than that, just leave 'em alone and let 'em grow.
