Mycellium can stay alive for years if on culture slants or agar dishes in cold storage.

Fully colonized grain jars can last months in the fridge.

Not sure about cakes but probably the same as the grain jars.

This depends on the critter in the jar.  Cubes last at most about six months on a shelf in my experience.  But really I personally I wouldn't use anything older than 4 months.  They mycelium grows weaker when aged past their prime and may contaminate more easily once spawned.  Better to start over and be assured you aren't wasting you time and materials.

It's really better to use everything as soon as it's ready. Putting it in the fridge will work, but it might take a day or two to recover after shaking/spawning. It's best to just get a smooth rotation going depending on how everything goes. This is much easier with an isolate, because you know pretty precisely how fast it's gonna colonize and pin.

These are the TEKs I use. They're all as cheap and easy as possible, just like your mom.

I agree.  I used to keep a spreadsheet to track and plan when I needed to make new jars and when and where they would get used.  I was usually accurate to within a few days or at most a week.
