Sick of shaking grain gars - Paint Shaker
    #17291451 - 11/27/12 03:48 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Thought I'd pose the question out there before I buy one.

I can get a used paint shaker for pretty cheap; I was thinking it would be perfect for shaking up grain jars..

Would it completely destroy the glass jars?

Would it effectively shake up the grain.

Would it be the wrong motion completely?

Thoughts?

Found this when I was looking up how one worked - figured I'd post it as it also shows you the motion they make

i dont see why they wouldnt work you would still have to break em up a lil bit though.

its not a bad workout when your getting 30jars ready to spawn.

I've been trying to come up with an idea of how to automate this, and a paint shaker never even occurred to me.  Brilliant!

Post pics when you get it.

You could make a vessel to assure that the jars wouldn't break. Take say a 5 gallon bucket it and fill it with something sturdy, yet soft enough to not cause damage. Insert few jars and voila.

I'm thinking that stuff that you put in spots and it expands and is like a Styrofoam.. anyone know what I'm talking about? Anyway it would be sturdy enough to not let the jars bang around and soft enough to absorb the impact, plus you could fit 3-4 jars maybe more in a 5 gallon bucket if you do it right.

Good Idea!

How has this not been thought of yet?? - or at least some way to automate it..

Can I get a shroomery rating for this idea or something? lol - how does that work anyway <<< NOOB

I'm hoping to pick one up this weekend so I'll keep you apprised.

Are you talking about sprayfoam insulation that comes in a can?

That stuff is very sticky and hard to remove once dried. I worked with it a lot when i used to build houses out of insulated concrete forms.

You might could spray some in a bag, close it up, set it in a paint can and then put the jar in so the bag is a barrier between the foam and the jar. Could be like a reusable mold.

That's exactly the stuff. Like you said just use a bag to make sure the jar can come out or make a cut out of the jar and the 5 gal bucket is reusable. There's also that stuff you use for shipping where you mix it up and it forms around whatever is in the box.

You're going to need some type of impact on the jar side to break up the mycelium network.
I've already thought of the paint shaker, but it doesn't seem viable.
It just doesn't seem logical when you think of breaking up solids vs. mixing liquids.
Think of the effort that it takes to stir a pot of boiling water vs. breaking up spawn jars.
That's what you're looking at, here.
I bet it'd work for shaking jars after a G2G, though, NP.

I think using spray foam and plastic bags to make a form inside of a 5 gal bucket would work if you make the openings for the jars a little big so they get knocked around a little would work.

Packaging materials are used to stop products from being banged around, thus causing failure.
How would adding packaging materials help break up solids in a grain jar?

Some people don't shake the colonized jars they just spoon them out.

I am against this idea.  Jars develop flaws over time and use.  Imagine what would happen to all that glass if the jar breaks whilst in the shaker.  You will be spraying shards in all directions.  My eyesight is worth more than the effort to shake a jar.  It really isn't that tough if you wash your grain well and add gypsum to the grain.  Oh and don't burst too many kernels.  Is far as just mixing partially colonized jars I do that at 25 percent.  Still way easy.

Don't get me wrong I am all for enginuity.  I just don't want to see anyone get hurt.

I seriously doubt that the glass would penetrate an inch or two of foam, and then the walls of a 5 gallon bucket.

"paint shakers are employed by commercial spawn makers but they are inappropriate for the home cultivator"  pg 47 in Stamets' TMC.

The only reason I can think of not to is the same chucklehead mentioned.  As long as you're not standing to close i'd imagine you'd be fine.

Like if you make so there's a bit of gap between the mold and the jar, then the jar would be able to slightly bounce around. Seems dangerous.

Personally, i think the juice ain't worth the squeezin" But i don't mind helping those on the path of self discovery.

Do you have a wife?  Or girlfriend?  Just make her shake the grain jars man.  In fact, if you could get her to shake the jars WHILE making you a sandwich, then you're onto something.

I would imagine loading and setting a timer on a paint shaker would be a lot less work that just shaking the jars by hand.

It seems to me, loading the thing into a paint shaker would take longer than just knocking and shaking the damn things yourself

Depends on how colonized it is, and if you're set up for efficiency.  I've had some jars colonize so thick that the only way to get them out was to scoop out the grains.

Once that stuff starts expanding it has a mind of its own and poison control doesn't no shit about it either There's no known solvent to dissolve it according to the number on the back of the can haha...I think I still have a piece saved in a zip lock baggie somewhere and this was 4 years ago

Good luck with project I wish I had something more valuable to contribute

On the back of a can of "Great Stuff" spray foam insulation, it says it expands to 3 times it size and must be mechanically removed.  LOL!

and that is the damn truth. When it started expanding and pulling on my scalp I knew I had made a very big mistake. Uncomfortable is not the word.

I guess I can relate to people who get cornrows with out ever having them

kerosene dissolves it, but is not a very good solution as it has it's own issues. You never really get it all off. I've used as many as 15 cans in 1 day on buildings. It is truly a sticky, clingy mess.

I'm pretty good with it because i've used it a lot, but it is very, very hard to control. It'll bow your door jam if you use too much.

I vote busty girl, but not mutant, can crushing boob girl. Mechanical shaker needs to be set up, loaded, waited on then unloaded and makes noise.

I'd say using a paint shaker or even wanting to for breaking up grain jars, is for lazy S.O.B.s period!!!

Yeah, this entire premise is silly.

Also, regardless of how long it takes, you should be inspecting each jar as you shake it for visible contamination.

Ever forget to shake a jar of oysters before?  In a very short time, they'll colonize to the point that you can barely get the colonized block of WBS to move in the jar, much less break up.  Now imagine you have a shelf or shelves full of jars in that state :ifyoucanawe:

For people planing to get into commercial cultivation, an automated system of shaking could be very useful.

I still don't think it would work.
You need some form of impact on the jar to break up the mycelium.
A paint shaker wouldn't cause such impact. It'd just be moving the "block" of colonized mycelium up & down in the jar.
As for "falling behind," stay on that shit, or that will happen.
I've had it happen many a time.
I resort to having to spoon out my spawn.
Also, if you use bags, you won't have that problem, which is what most commercial growers use.

Why have paint shakers at all then? Just shake the paint up yourself like a man!

In fact why drive to work? Just walk 5 miles you lazy bastard!

Also how dare you use a laundry machine! Scrub those clothes! LAZYYY!!!

And this whole "central air" fad.. go cut down your own trees, cut them into logs and get a fire going.. honestly LAZY LAZY LAZY

Oh and don't even get me started on dish washers, or pepper grinders or.. you know.. most human inventions ever created.. It's not lazy, it's efficiency.

Either way the ad I originally saw for a cheap used one is now gone. So for now it's not worth the expense. I'll keep my eyes open for another used one though.

Don't waste your money!

This thing stirs and shakes.

You need figure out something that smacks the jar and shakes.

A pneumatic rubber mallet or something.

Take a bike tire with wheel, hub and all and mount it flat on a wall with enough gap so it will spin.

Attack big, rubber dildos to the wheel.

Attach jars to wall in such a way so the dildos will slap against jars when wheel is spinning.

My dick gets sore after slapping jars on it. Plus its extra special complicated which is a plus in this hobby.

I have a few squares of cheap anti-fatigue mats.

http://cheap-treadmills.net/img/48-square-feet-12-tiles-borders-we-sell-mats-charcoal-gray-2-x-2-x-38-anti-fatigue-interlocking-eva-foam-exercise-gym-flooring_2895_300.jpg

Got it at the hardware store.

I play some decent fast music with a good beat.

I take a stack of jars and put them on the floor.

I sit down on the floor and smack the jar down on the bottom "corner", and spin it a bit at I smack it down again.  Mostly gravity and bounce.

I get a bit of exercise, bopping to the music, and can do a BUNCH of jars very quickly, almost no effort.

This is what I use.

The last place you want to "shake," or bang jars is the ground.
Too many contaminates down there. That's what she said

But seriously, you could rig something up to work to mechanically bang/shake jars.
A Paint shaker would NOT do it.

Too many contaminates down there.

Those jars are sealed, with an RTVed chunk of filter disk. I have no problem storing jars on the bottom shelf of my area. When I go to open them later, I do a serious wipe and spray down, and then they sit in an ozone shock chamber for 30 minutes before I open them.

I've once hit it in such a way that the solid myc block dropped down and the filter made a sucking noise.  I assume THAT is BAD and now always tap at an angle for the initial breakup to avoid it.  But even that jar layed out fine and the tub didn't contam. I guess I've been very lucky. Or the ozone fixes my mistakes.

I wouldn't put a monotub on the floor, but my jars?  Sure.

I have a few squares of cheap anti-fatigue mats.

:laugh2:
That is AWESOME. You just made my hangover more bearable

This is what I use.

The last place you want to "shake," or bang jars is the ground.
Too many contaminates down there. That's what she said

But seriously, you could rig something up to work to mechanically bang/shake jars.
A Paint shaker would NOT do it.

I saw a funny post on google news about 2 months back. It was about the 5 second rule. Basically they said if you drop something edible on the ground, and pick it back up within 5 seconds, it still is contaminated. However they went to mention that the countertop that you prepare food on 9 times out of 10 has more contaminates than the floor.

I smack all my jars on the floor, never had a problem with contams. Just don't bang the lid
