Quick BRF question
    #1728588 - 07/18/03 06:53 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I typically put the BRF on a cookie sheet and put it into the oven for a while at 400 degrees to help minimize contamination prior to mixing with the vermiculite (which I similiarly heat) and mineral water in preperation for the steaming. Is this unnecessary, and do I run the risk of degrading nutrients in the BRF in doing so?

So straight out of the bag is fine then, no need to heat up the BRF as contamination prevention, just mix with the verm and mineral water and steam. Do you think I may be damaging the nutrients in doing so?

Yeah hobbit just pc it...if ya heat anything up for an extented time it will degrade nutrients..Your doing BRF and you arent going to get any contams till ya case it...unless you screw up badly

Cool, I've done it based upon a discussion of it last fall, in which there seemed to be some kind of consensus that it was a good idea, but wondered about nutrient degredation in doing so.

you should be cool. from what i understand, when you pressure cook something you are raising the temp to 250 degrees. some people say that 250 degrees will sterilize what you are cooking in your PC. which i guess it works, because i PC green beeans, peppers, tomato juice, and other fresh garden treats. these will last almost indefinatly. for example, i was at my grandma's house a few weeks ago, while in the basement i found a quart jar of green bean that had been knocked off the back of the shelf and forgotten. i would say that jar was most likely around 20 years old. The jar of green beans was still good. (no i didn't eat them lol) It still had proper water content and did not smell bad when i opened it to see. the point of all of this is, when you PC something you are killing all the bacteria and other baddies in the jar, so if you then have a vacuum seal on that jar it should last a very long time. hope this helps, have a good day.
