What species do u plan on growing?

I'm doing the 50/50+ tek with peat/verm/oyster shells/ hydrated lime.

Do u plan on using that as your substrate mixture, or as a casing layer over a substrate?

You still haven't told us what you are growing...so im gonna guess P.Cubensis.

I think You confusing a casing layer with a bulk substrate. They used to refer to a bulk substrate as a casing, but now it just adds confusion.

A casing layer is a non nutritious top layer usually applied to a fully colonized bulk substrate for moisture retention and pinning.

P.Cubensis do no benefit from a casing layer.

What it sounds like you are trying to do is spawn your grains to casing material, which is not recommended(peat is casing layer material)...spawn your grains to coir/verm, or horse poo/verm for best results, and then you can optionally case that with a casing layer once its fully colonized.

As for the oyster shells I have no idea, I do not case my bulk substrates.

I've actually found a good use for a casing layer myself.
In my monos, I usually keep all the holes stuffed for humidity retention.
If I case the substrate though, I can open up the top two holes and give the tub a lot of extra FAE while still retaining 99% RH on the sub.
The casing layer can be misted every now and again, and if it happens to dry out a bit, it doesn't affect the crop as much as if the substrate itself was drying out

Yes cubes.
I spawn my grains to bulk
5050 peat andverm was the tek I learned from. A friend.
It might not be right but I yield 3.5 dry oz off each case
So something mush be right.
Basically I have one of those aluminumnbaking Tins the ones with the clear dome cover.
I put a bottom layer of 50/50 down
I shake my colonized jar until its all broken up.
I then put down a nice layer of colonized grain.
Then I cover it with 50/50 and cover it with the dome lid.
Then I put the case inside a covered plastic tote.
When I see a good strong mycelium network on top of the "cake"
I initiate fruiting by taking the inner dome lid off, giving a 12/12 light cycle and giving fae.
That's what I do.

Next time mix the grains real good with the substrate instead of layering it, you will like the result.

Also you should try using coir or horse poo...I yield 1oz dry per quart of spawn i use..and thats on the first 2 flushes alone..i usually use 6 quarts per tub.

U say u layered it, then u say u mixed it well...which one?

Also they should be getting ambient/indirect light for colonization.

Light has been proven beneficial during all stages of mycellium growth. Mushrooms like mammals have a circadian rhythm.

I heard you, and I quoted you...

Making sure no grains are showing, and mixing the grains up with the substrate material thoroughly rather than layering are 2 totally different things.

You said you put down a layer, then put your grains, then another layer of substrate...that is not mixing it well, that is LAYERING.

If you mix up the grains with the substrate you are spreading out the inoculation points evenly throughout, thus colonizing the substrate faster.

Not to mention it can be dont with bare hands, no need for sterilized tools, just mix it together with clean hands..

I mean you have already introduced them to fresh air and contams...touching them a little wont hurt.

i believe he is just describing casing grain and using a "bottom casing layer" to help preserve moisture. NEVER use peat as substrate its a casing so no do not mix only layer it in that manner and fruit when it shows through the casing evenly. once you get a hold of that then you can spawn to bulk with coir or h poo. it just enables you more fruit for the amount of spawn used, hence calling it bulk substrate. this is when you can mix it. i don't i find that it bounces back better when the grain is consolidated by layering and then the pasteurized substrate helps protect the sterilized grain.

so just as a go over. bird seed = spawn; coir and h poo = substrate; and peat verm 50/50 = casing.

you can continue just casing spawn and will get results or you can spawn to bulk and increase your yields

hope that helps clear up a little bit of the confusion in this thread

you could take that and modify it slightly and use bulk substrate in mono tubs and with that amount of space several pounds would be easily accessible. I also kind of like doc t's mini mono's inside a greenhouse. that seams ideal. just a well regulated greenhouse with trays is also a good option, but basically you could spawn a couple of quarts of bird seed to a block of coir and easily get a pound out of the resulting flushes.

Define 'pullet' size.  If you use oyster shells, it should be ground to flour.  If you use hydrated lime to adjust pH, 4% is 4 times too much.  Use no more than 1%.

Peat/verm is a casing layer mix, not substrate.

Pullet sized. Its ground to little pieces About a quarter of the size of a fine.
I followed ryche hawks 50/50 plus tek
It called for 4 % hydrated lime by volume and 15 % crushed oyster shells by volume.
I hope that's right because I pasteurized last night...

That tek is only for making a casing layer.

What do you plan on doing with that mixture?

Do u plan on mixing colonized grains in with it, or do u plan on layering the grains between it?

Sorry, but its still unclear to me what you are doing exactly.

Ok you should be preparing a bulk substrate mixture, not a casing layer mixture...do not mix the grains in what you have.

Follow one of these teks, or a mixture of them, but stick to the teks, then you can apply the casing layer mixture to the bulk substrate, only when its fully colonized tho.

Or instead of using coir, find a horse poo tek, but that requires proper pasteurization.
