Do I need to grind my long grain BR into BRF for jars?
    #1728229 - 07/18/03 06:35 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I realized that I put together my jars without blending my brown rice into a flour. I went ahead and inoculated some jars anyways, and am wondering if it will work, or if I should emtpy the jars now and start over.

Since it is also possible to use only rice as substrate without vermiculite, it will likely work.

verm was added by Psylocybe Fanaticus (PF) to give the mycelium space to move and room to breath and he couldn't see what was going on inside the jars due to the sticky rice sticking to the sides of the jars so he couldn't tell if it was colonized or what but if you used verm and you PC the jars then you should be ok but it may take longer to colonize i would wait a week or 2 and if you don't see any growth i would trash them

Interesting, I would like to see the results.

I pick up BRF at the supermarket pretty cheaply (Health Food section); is there any advantage in grinding brown rice yourself, since cost doesn't seem to be much of a factor?

If you cooked the rice appropriattely, then it would act as a grain jar instead of a PF cake style jar. You would effectively be making a mini amount of bulk spawn. If you were intending to produce BRF cakes though, then the procedure you used is probably totally different than what it would take to cook rice for jars.

I'll go ahead and give the jars 7 days to see if they show any mycelium growth then. I have added verm to them and followed the PF Tek exactly except grinding the brown rice up. I dunked the BR in water before I made the jars; I read something about it in a pre sterilizing article. I also read something about leaving rice unblended, so at the time I was under the impression that I would have no problems in doing what I did.

TheHobbit, according to the Magic M. Guide, grinding your own BRF up helps speed the overall colonization of the jars. It also states to add a little more water since it soaks up more.

Have you seen any growth?

I haven't. It's only day 3 so far - I'm going to wait about 10 days.

A friend of mine made a few jars with whole long grain BR and vermi, he did not pre soak before sterrilizing. He used eq's, last time he ground the rice and used B+. He noticed growth within 1 week, and its spreading slightly faster than his B+ did, however it isnt as dense of a growth. Also the rice seems to turn a reddish brown hue when the fungus spreads over it. my friend thought he had contams, but its consistant in all 6 of his jars, and the "hairs" are nice and white. only the rice grains are turning reddish.
