SNOW CAMPING
    #17280666 - 11/25/12 06:04 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I'm going this year for the first time.
Looking for tips, tricks, & tales of horror.

We'll be constructing a man cave with a small central fire.

pads to sit/sleep on.  Also something to insulate your food like foam around the bowl.  Food gets cold too quick in the elements and the last thing I want is to be eating cold spaghetti or what ever at the end of the day. I also put socks around my water bottles to help slow down the freezing.  Bring lots of sweets like chocolate or hard candies.  Sweets help keep the cold chill out a bit at night.  Besides lots of layers and food I'd also bring extra pairs of gloves and hats and socks. I also bring some large and small plastic bags for what ever I may need them for. Say my boots are leaking I can put the bag over my socks.  Or I can lay them under my sleeping pad for extra protection.  Bring at least a few days worth of extra food.  Also ski poles help with walking.

Awesome man. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I'm planning on making hot soup inside the mancave and filling thermos up with it ect.
Aso gonna pick a mild day where its not below zero. Should be a blast!

I always boil some water and pour it in a thick plastic bottle and throw it in my bag before I get in. I dont sleep in a cave, I use a bivy with a sleeping bag, so not sure how cold it will be in the little cave.

Well it gets to -30 easily but I'm looking to avoid such temps!  Shooting for +20.
I love nature so much tho. It's worth battling it just to trip outside & look at the sky.

I cant imagine tending the campfire enjoyable at -30. My experiences in the low 30's were formidable, though it was raining which made it more daunting. How are you equipped?

Pretty well. It was fall camping, where we made an elaborate "mancave" with a tiny fire inside , that inspired the idea. Tarps, rope, pine limbs & blankets. I'll probably bring a sled full of split kindling. Maple.

If you can't find a cave to sleep in try this:

Build a short lean-to and attach a emergency blanket to the under side of the roof and drape a sheet of clear plastic over and down the front, pinning it tightly along the top and at the ground and along 1 end of the opening, leaving one side loose to get into . Then build a long fire in front of the lean-to ( 3 to 5 feet away) the entire length of the front of the lean-to in a shallow trench with some rocks on the far side of the fire to act as a reflector. The fire doesn't need to be a rip roaring fire. You can also put a tarp over the roof of the lean-to for added protection from the elements and more insulation. Use pine boughs as bedding material to insulate yourself from the ground, placing your bag on top. The emergency blanket will reflect the heat from the fire down onto you and the clear plastic acts like a mini green house.

I've used this method in sub zero temps before and slept as good as I do indoors. If built right the temps inside the lean-to will be around 70 degrees f. or so depending on the out side temps.

Maybe not totally relevant, but in the movies you used to see homeless people depicted using newspapers as blankets. Actually an effective method of heat conservation is to bundle the paper up and stuff it inside your cloths.

I have been getting geared up for winter camping as well, I just need some snow shoes and a shovel and I'm ready to go.. The hardest part has been convincing someone to come with me!

ah, winter camping isn't for me. well, at least not anymore. back in the day it was a blast in scouts. but now, shit, I want some bud, the sun out till 8:30, scorching heat, ticks, mosquitoes, you name it. I'll take it all over freezing my face off, not feeling my hands, wet feet, everything constantly wet, cold, uncomfortable. fuck that.
But good for you brother, it can certainly be a blast. I'm just over it for the most part.

right on! i was planning on doing this as well on some farm property that i own. was going to set up my solo tent wrapped in a tarp and then pile snow around it.
awesome idea with the lean-to, that would be fun just to hang out in with friends. definitely bringing a bit of my own wood.

I'd imagine it would get wet eventually, but you can do a few things to delay all that. Like #1 put a tarp under your tent, #2 Use the straps on tent's covering top to repel water away from your tent.  Bring towels, paper towels, and plastic bags for safe keeping of electronics.  Thinking about it I'd want a few hangers to hang my drenched jacket, hoodie, and snowpants.  Go before a good storm storm would be awesome.  I would so want X-Country skis or regular skis even for that trip.

Yep me thinks it wont be wet at all because this tarp is so damn big and my tent is so damn small that ill wrap it like a burrito like i always do; adds layer between tent and ground and covers it completely so i can ride out storms.

^pine boughs are a great idea  i was wondering what to use for added support because i figured the snow would be pretty damn heavy on top of my tent. problem solved!

when i camped in the snow once i punctured my air mat, since then i carry a thermarest z rest, which is a solid pad. having your insulation from the ground be so fragile like an air mat can be dangerous in the snow. also on the same trip i discovered that wearing a sock over a plastic bag and another sock really keeps you're feet warm, and won't sweat unless you're doing some serious activity which you should watch out for in very cold weather

honestly sock and bag over it works pretty well multiple just gets kinda bulky and sweaty unless you are using thin micro socks

awesome! i love winter camping, best way to get through the rainy winter is to get out to the mountains where it's snowing! snow cave is the way to go if there's enough snow and you want to pack light. just make sure the snow is about a foot thick above you (not too thick to hurt you if it caves in, and thick enough to give you some insulation). a good technique is to dig a trench, then you can hollow out 2 sleeping sections on the sides of your trench, and cover the trench with a tarp. plan for an hour or so for setup, and the work will keep you warm  often snow caves are warmer than a tent i find because of less exposure and more insulation. happy & safe adventures!

The verdict: SHIT WAS WILD! For the most part it was warm by the fire. Some cold moments tho! Tripping in nature is always great.
The tarp/pine shelter idea turned out even better than I thought it would. Dug a hole for the fire. We did this during a blizzard that started right after we set up. I don't have any after storm pics but the whole thing was piled up!  Fun shit folks... not for the faint of heart tho!

Somehow it looks a lot smaller that it was really. Probably 8 x 5 feet.
My friend & I layed down towards the end of the night. It was hard to sleep after the fungal ride. I got about 2hrs sleep. Actually had ice on my ass! Haha.

Oh shit, I forgot to mention that our fort was circled by wolves! My friend was freaking out but I was ready to fight. Hatchet in one hand, knife in the other. I'm sure I don't stand a chance but I don't fear death and I don't back down from animals.  It's play it cool or die swinging for me. No joke.
I brought this big chicken to roast too but after they left I said fuck that let's not attract them back here
