Why do you suppose the brf tek is 2/3 verm? Because fungi has need of minerals, that's why. I want to rip someone's ears off when I read verm has no 'nutes'. There's lots of material that will hold as much water as vermiculite, such as peatmoss, sand, coir, cardboard, shredded newspapers, and about ten thousand others, but verm is what we use because it has many of the minerals that mushrooms want, as does gypsum.
However, brf cakes are already 2/3 verm so find another nutrient source if you want to move on from there. RR

What you're saying in regards to agar makes sense, though I don't see a correlation between agar and coir. Agar is easily digestable, coir is not so my theory seems solid. I could easily add some manure to the grow to decrease colonization time, I'm just looking for something a bit easier to prep, preferably something that doesn't take up much space which is why I'm hoping the castings will do that job. If 1/2 cup of castings per tub improved colonization speed, a 20lb bag of castings would last me years.

Verm is a type of expanded clay and thus contains a variety of minerals. Trying to grow on straight verm would be like a human trying to live on straight carrots. Carrots are good, but they aren't a wholesome meal. Add some carrots to the meal and the meal is better.
I'm not sure what the exact percentage of verm would be to gain the maximum nutrient benefit, but probably less than is commonly used since verm is also used to hydrate. From a strict nutritional viewpoint I dunno, maybe 10% by weight might be a good guess.
