Monotub FAE GE questions
    #17278122 - 11/25/12 10:24 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

My monotub has six holes and made just like the tek.
How do i change from GE to FAE?
Currently i have the bottom four holes covered with tap and two holes filled with polyfil , i figure i would just put polyfil in them when they are fully colonized.
Will this work?

You should have taped up all of the holes...u want a lot oc co2 for colonization and consolidation...

When u go to fruit it thats when u take the tape off and put polyfill in all the holes, to allow for FAE, which is the #1 pinning trigger.

how big in diameter are your holes.

also you should have all your holes taped up until 100% surface colonization or when pins show up.

and yes when its time to fruit you remove the tape and loosely stuff poly fil into the holes

Why would u seal the lid, but allow air to come in thru the holes?

Seems a little counter productive...anyways take the tape off the lid and tape up all the holes.

You want no fresh air for colonization, just a lot of co2 buildup with some GE, that the imperfect lid should provide.

Wow, weird i never noticed that b4...I'm gonna say thats outdated info, unless the polyfill in those 2 holes are packed extremely tight.

^^This is a better momotub tek....

I'm currently doing a comparison grow. One tub has all holes stuffed with polyfill. One tub has all holes sealed. I'm on day 5 and both tubs are colonizing at the same rate so far.

I've also got 4-5 coir grows under my belt now. I notice that coir is much slower to colonize than hpoo. I'm guessing it's just more difficult for the mycelium to break the coir down, but it's not a direct indicator of reduced yield. Still, in the future I will be playing with a variety of additives in an attempt to get a quicker initial colonization.

I've also considered boiling the fuck out of the coir to help break down the cellular structure... but that would entail extra work which would negate the whole point of switching to coir.

Technically, by adding more nutrients you are working againts yourself, the more nutritios the substrate, the longer it takes the mycellium to colonize...

I cant count the number of times I have seen RR say that if u want faster growth on agar, cut the nutrients in half.

The point isn't to beef up the nutrients, I think coir has plenty. The idea is to provide a very low amount of highly bio-available nutrients distributed evenly throughout the substrate to give the mycelium an incentive to colonize quickly.

I'll first try adding small amounts of worm castings thoroughly mixed with the verm prior to hydration. If that doesn't work I will try finely shredded straw. Either way I'll never know until I try. I appreciate the heads up though.

The sealed/unsealed tub test hasn't finished yet, but one other observation worth noting is that there's more condensate on the sealed tubs. So everything else being equal the sealed tub should have a higher water content approaching the first flush.

Edit: just to update, the sealed tub has finished, while the polyfill stuffed tub has slowed. Shrooms prefer the sealed environment for colonization.

Thats not what I'm saying, and verm has nutrients in it.
