Pinning Hormone?!

Hey guys. Does anyone who read The Mushroom Cultivator remember hearing something about blending up a pin in water and spraying it on a casing to induce primordiation? If anyone has tried this, gimme a hand. That would be tight, but I don't have the knowledge to begin to understand if/how it might work. Someone mentioned it over in Basic Cult.

I didn't try it but I'd blend pins in water, sterilize it and then spray it on casing. What species did you have in mind? This is certainly not needed for cubes.

hmm, so if I were to take a pin or a couple pins and blended it in some spring water then spray it on my cakes/casings then this would speed up the process of pinning???
Would this work for p. cubensis?

P. cubensis pins so easily that it would be hard to notice the difference. I would try it with some other species that doesn't pin so readily.

My friends cubes take forever to pin. He grows Lipa's, and cases them. He has a coir/verm casing that has birdseed substrate in it, he has been waiting 16 days for pins and doesn't even have hyphal knots. He fans it about 5 times a day, gives it 12 hours of light, keeps the casing misted and the temps at around 70-75 all the time. To my knowledge, those are perfect pinning conditions (oh yeah the humidity is up around 90 most of the time too), but my friends mushies don't seem to respond.

Has it grown through the casing well, or no?
You really don't need 90% rH, but I guess it should be fine if you're fanning it that much. Not the way I do things, so I don't know. If it hasn't grown through the casing that's another problem, but if it's grown through o.k. and it's not overlayed maybe it's just stubborn. You could always stick it in the fridge overnight and see what happens.
As for the hormones, I would think sterilizing them could denature them. You need young pins for this. The hormones are soluble in distilled water and insoluble in pure methanol (hint, hint, extraction.) They're also insoluble in chloroform and petrolium benzene. Since you need young pins for this, though, it might be a waste of time -- I don't know how much it takes to get a good effect.

Joshua, if you don't mind could you PM me details or post details of what you have mentioned? This may serve well if one were to cultivate hard to fruit edibles.
lumenhed--I agree with everyone else, its just not needed for such a strong fruiter like cubensis.

Hhe, looks like i better start using another strain then. I could just grow B+ like everyone else and get huge shitty mushies that you have to eat 1/4 of to trip lol.

Anno,
Do you know if there is any medium that can be added to the substrate that is high enough in brassinosteroids to be beneficial? According to the links it requires kilos of rape even to be extracted?
The synthetic products are way too expensive.

Maybe we could get one of the distributers to start selling dilutions of the stuff -- I mean, if you get 1000L of working solution at .01 ppm out of 10mg for $200, they could sell a liter of .1 PPM that, at 1:9 dilution, would give you the proper dilution. That means they'd get 100L to sell at, say, $10 a pop, giving a profit of $800, minus the cost of water and bottles. Heck, even $10 for a 500 ml bottle would be a decent buy, and give you enough to last a looong time.
