Malt with Yeast

The only place I can find light malt extract is in beer brew kits. However, these all have yest mixed in them.
Could I still make an agar solution from this?
I would expect to find light malt extract and agar agara powered/flakes at a bulk barn, but no such luck. Nobody knows what this stuff even is here.
Will malt extract from a beer kit work for an agar mix?

Yeast is sometimes used in liquid cultures and agar, it's a nutritional source for mycelium, but you have to be sure that the yeast is killed in the sterilization process or it will contaminate very rapidly.

I think I'll just follow a normal tek only with the yeast mixed in and agar agar, then PC it.
Will the dead yest actually help my mycelim grow?

Yeast and agar agar is sufficient for agar plate work?
Last time I made agar I used honey, dried potato flakes and agar agar. Mycelium was very slow growing on it..

No it is mixed in at usually 2 grams per liter in a PDA or MEA or for that matter any other recipe. It is just a bit of added nutrition.

Ah ok.. Shame! I got excited then! Is Barley malt extract ok for agar work?
Might get another batch of agar plates on the go.. It was very fun and I definitely felt like a top scientist!

Here is a link to FastFred's Media Cookbook that has over 50 media formulas. Hope this helps a little!
