IDE Setup
    #1713510 - 07/14/03 04:39 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I have 2 Hard Disks, 1 DVD Writer and 1 DVD-ROM.

Is it preferable to have the HDs on one IDE channel, and the DVDs on the other? Or is it better to have say my Primary HD and the DVD Writer on one channel, with my Storage HD and the DVD-ROM on the other. If so what is the reasoning behind this?

Unless you are setting up your box for a special purpose( ie sound recording/mastering etc ), it shouldn't matter that much. In theory you would want to have the devices that will read/copy from each other the most on the same IDE.
I'm not a computer expert, but just off the top of my head from what I've experienced this is what I can offer you.

Oh wait, or am I a computer expert??

I thought you wanted two devices that are doing the mosts data transfering on seperate IDE channels. Like your HD and burner on different channels. Reason being is that only the master or slaver can talk at one time so if they are on different channels they can transfer data directly without having to buffer it first and send it back up the same channel.

What would be the best if I wanted to copy DVDs on the fly?

If you have a dvd and a dvd-r them put them on different channels so it doesn't have to buffer the data. But I'm a WAN tech not a PC hardware tech. I'll ask our client server tech when he gets out of the TRIM meeting to make sure.

So I asked our c/s guy. If you are going for quality (he does music so quality is big for him) you should not do copy on the fly. Write an image to your HD first and burn that. For speed, seperate IDE channels is the way to go.
