Diatomaceous Earth, non-alcoholic beer and nightly raids
    #1724767 - 07/17/03 12:46 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I heard Diatomaceous Earth works wonders against insects that like to raid mushrooms that grow outdoors. I haven't found a place in my area that sells this stuff... I've called up garden stores, and the people I talked to didn't even know what it was! So, for those of you who have found a source for this... PLEASE list it.
Also, if you know whether or not non-alcoholic beer like Oduals(sp?) works, please tell me!
For now, a good approach seems to be just look around for slugs at night, and I don't really know what time they come out either...

Thanks in advance for any answers!

I dug a trench around where I think mushrooms grow  and filled it with salt. One thing I don't want it rain washing the salt into the mycelia... you know it's bad. Nothing grows in salt.
Still, I would like answers to the DE, oduals and time question.

Thats a nice resource, most of the places I've seen want to sell it in very large amounts. It's a nice source, and thank you... but do you have any idea where I can get it locally? I love to get things locally, so if I ever need some in a pinch I can just make a special trip instead of waiting a couple of days for it to come in the mail...

Someone is Joshes thread in advanced Cult said that the DE at pool stores has silica in it and is NOT what you need. I went to get some from the pool place untill I read this. Has anyone used the stuff from pool stores? Someone said fish stores carry 20lb bags of pure diatomite(Same thing as DE). I go out at 12 O' clock every night and pick any slugs I can see. I had a small slug this long ___ Eat an entire stem of my mushroom so look for little ones too!

I did check Josh's thread, but I read that "Diatomaceous Earth used in swimming pool filters has close to a 60% crystalline silica content" due to a process that heat it significantly. You need to use DE with less than 1% crystalline silica content, becuase anything with 1% or greater is considered carcinogenic. The kind that your 'supposed' to use is Amorphous fresh water Diatomaceous Earth, the kind that you use as a pesticide and can mix in grains or use to supplement cattle feed and ble ble ble. But a local source? I'm not even sure if it exists anymore : (

Check with mom and pop type nursuries. Organic shops will definately have it. I have bought it at ACE Hardware before to. I mix it and cinammon up and put it around my tent when I go camping. It keeps the ants away.

you need real beer to make beer traps....

fuck all the DE and salt...
just sit in your backyard with a mother'lovin shotgun...
see a slug, pop a slug in its ass.....

its good fun for the whole family....

(and if the problem persists, its just as easy to grow mushrooms in flowerpots where slugs cant get to them)

Try a well-stocked salt-water aquarium store. DE is used as filter media. Add about 3% by volume to your casings to keep critters out.

Good luck!
