Got all the stuff I need! Need anything else?
    #1722712 - 07/16/03 07:05 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Yeeeeeeeeha! I ordered my spores today, I got my vermiculite, perlite, peat, finch seed, fruiting chambers, and to top it all off, I just won an auction for a 21 qt pressure cooker for $50 gauranteed to work....YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH! Oh yeah...I've read that you can sterilize your casing mix in a pressure cooker inside of the bag the vermiculite or peat came in...has anyone tried this? I just dont want the bag to shrivel up around my mix.

Err its called pressure. When the water boils inside the jars it will cause steam and pressure to build up. They have to be released so the jars explode. The jars need to have a filter, and a hole in them so you can pc them safely. I sterilize my casing mix in a dish covered with seranwrap in the microwave for 5 minutes then stirr and nuke for 5 more minutes. Id go buy a box of widemouth quart jars, 3 bags of yellow popping corn, 8 plastic canning jar lids, a 10 pack of Filter disks,A candy thermometer, pillow case, and a plastic strainer.

"Err its called pressure"
ERR its called pressure canning.

Stew Meat

Ingredients
Beef, Veal, Lamb, Mutton, Pork or Venison

Instructions
Prepare Ball brand or Kerr brand jars and closures according to instructions found in Canning Basics.

Select roast or less tender cuts of meat. Cut meat into 1 1/2- to 2-inch cubes. Remove fat and gristle. Simmer meat in water to cover until hot throughout. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt to each pint, 1 teaspoon salt to each quart, if desired. Pack hot meat into hot jars, leaving 1-inch headspace. Carefully ladle hot cooking liquid over meat, leaving 1-inch headspace. Remove air bubbles with a nonmetallic spatula. Wipe jar rim clean. Place lid on jar with sealing compound next to glass. Screw band down evenly and firmly just until a point of resistance is met - fingertip tight.

Process pints 1 hour and 15 minutes, quarts 1 hour and 30 minutes, at 10 pounds pressure in a steam-pressure canner.

if you want to use bags use oven bags there designed to handle heat they won't melt.i still think jars are better thou.i reconmend using jars for your grain sterlization.

yes, and what you do to properly can is leave the lids loose to let air escape, then when they are finished pc'ing you tighten them up before they have a chance to cool completely. as the air cools it shrinks, this causes a vacuum and it seals up, assuming you leave the rubber seal facing down.

it's a breathable type of material that is woven (made by dupont) way better to use on your jars than coffee filters. If you find a FedEx envelope, read the back, it's made of tyvek...and in most cases it is free from a post office, but dont take to much or they'll be pissed

NO

Don't ask for shit. Just look for next day air envelopes.

Ever got and envelope that is reall hard to open with the closing glue? Keeps on sticking but never feels like it's gonna rip? That's tyvek.

It's thin like paper but really strong and looks like fibrous material. The tyvek is trademarked on the back. I found some today in MailBoxes Etc. so I know it's everywhere.
