Koreans fire across border

Thursday, July 17, 2003 Posted: 0319 GMT (11:19 AM HKT)

http://edition.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/asiapcf/east/07/16/koreas.firing/index.html

SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- South and North Korean troops have briefly exchanged gunfire in the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone that divides the peninsula.

The rare exchange -- the first on the border since November 2001 -- occurred as Beijing said it would visit Washington to talk about North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

At 6.10 a.m. South Korean time Thursday (2110 GMT Wednesday), North Korean soldiers fired four rounds from a military outpost, the South's joint chiefs of staff said in a statement.

South Korea broadcast warnings telling the North they were violating an armistice that ended the Korean War and retaliated by firing 17 rounds back.

North Korea has yet to issue a statement on the incident near the South Korean town of Yoncheon, but officials from the South said there were no casualties on their side.

A U.N. Military Armistice Commission is heading to the border, which bristles with watchtowers, razor wire, landmines, tank-traps and heavy weaponry, to assess the situation and find out whether the incident was intentional or accidental.

i think we should stay out of the mess in N. Korea. Let those that are closest to them worry take care of them. In addition i think we should pull our troops out of the area completly.

Come on, the North Korean government is truly evil, by any standard.

And it's a big mistake to think that a communist government will care at all if the capitalist world calls them "evil" or not. They are simply trying to blackmail the rest of the world into giving them free money, to cover up the fact that their own socialist system doesn't work at all.

So you dont think, that if South Korea, an independent and democratic ally of the United States, was to be invaded by a Communist, totalitarian police state, that we should assist them? In ANY way? At all?

Kind of cold-hearted of you, dontcha think?

Sure we should HELP (if they're invaded) them but it seems that there are plenty of countries out there who have the ability to send troops faster than we can get them there. It also seems that anytime the US is involved with something that we are scorned and called oppressors. I say it's a local issue and perhaps it's time for those countries (especially the UN ones (China and Russia)) to solve their own problems or head an operation in ousting N. Korean leaders.

For once I agree with Inny...the U.S. has no business over there, and in all reality, their involvement would probably only serve to escalate things.

I can't find the article at the moment, but I read yesterday about a retired US general who predicts that the US will be at war with N. Korea by the end of the year. :frown:

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

I would be against ant pre-emptive attack on Korea no matter how much of a percieved threat they are. Now if they attack us that's a different story.

yes, but what you need to understand is that these two countries, a dichotomy that was created by the cold war, want to resolve their own problems in a peaceful way, (which includes economic integration, and as a consequence-the cessation of totalitarian socialism in NK) and they were doing so, until the US got involved and fucked everything up.

anyways....the border shooting is no big deal, it happens a few times a year.

but i fear that its too late for the koreans to resolve their problems, the US is hell bent on manifest destiny. Although it will be extremely difficult to invade N Korea after this whole iraq controversy which has destroyed the Bush administrations credibility, I fear a conspiracy is looming. The japanese defense force is the second most powerful military in the world (to the US), but due to their constitution, they are not allowed to attack anyone. BUT! recently, the japanese puppet-government which is controlled by the US has decided it wants to change their constitution from being unable to attack, to being able to attack "just in case" ie- pre-emptively

Wow! So you think about the totalitarian communist states as "dichotomies created by the cold war"? Do you have any idea of what the cold war was about?

Ya know even those millions of koreans are currently dying in N. korea i think we should stick to our own matters. Even thogh china and russia want nothing to do with the N. korea situation i think we should just leave it alone. Heck it should work it sell out anyway. Hell maybe so many koreans will die they can throw them out to sea and it will increase the siz of N korea so much they will be happy with their larger space and forget about S korea and everything else.

btw i never got why we even thought about fighting the germans. I mean only 6 millions jews as well as other europeans were dying. Who cares about those nubs there not americans
