I was just curious if anyone on here has ever done a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail. Not this coming year but the following year, 2014, is when i plan on making my 2,175 journey from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine. If anyone on here has hiked the trail before feel free to share a little bit of your experience. Gotta say im pretty damn excited already

I've only ever done section hikes on the AT, and I think I'm happy with that.. Much respect to those who attempt the whole shebang. But what's your plan? Ultralighting and moving quickly? Support team dropping supplies every few days? Or totally self-sufficient.
And I live just off the AT just north of the PA/MD border (right next to the half way point). Let me know when you plan on hitting this area and i'll come hike the Michaux state forest with ya.

I've also only done section hikes of the AT when I lived in Virginia, plenty happy with that as well. Had planned on thru-hiking it for years but never could spare the time/money investment at the same time. Heard from plenty it's the experience of a lifetime to complete a thru-hike. We have a few shroomerites who have or have come very close. Make sure to plan well Also http://whiteblaze.net/forum/content.php if you don't already live there

My plan is to probably pack heavy. I got a ULA Catalyst pack so i can fit a lot of stuff in there and last time i used it there was more than enough room for a week trip. I don't plan on using any mail drops or anything because i feel that it would be too much a of a headache if i get into town on a Saturday and have to wait till Monday for post office to open so im just using my good luck to go from store to store lol. if I use a mail drop at all it will be for when i get into new york and those northern states because it'll be getting cold at night and ill want a better sleeping bag.

I bet you a quarter of the way through your plan changes to pack light.. Most people drop a lot of weight in the first couple weeks, AT is pretty much the trail that pioneered the ultralight philosophy

Yeah most definitely get a few section hikes under your belt first, that way you can get a feel for the flow of things and figure out what you really need vs what you don't.
