H. capnoides or fasiculare
    #17241110 - 11/18/12 02:27 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Hello again mycophilic friends! :sporedrop:

Can everyone please share their thoughts about distinguishing the two title species without a scope?

I'm going to get some pictures up before the day is over, but I wanted post in trying to get some thoughts from you all. I'm more familiar with fasiculare, but its been a while since I've seen it. I found something resembling them today, but I'm not sure of their ID. Pics incoming.

In doing some minor research, I've come up with tasting for mild vs. bitter. Yes? No? Any other simple ways to separate them?

:bliss:

The main difference between these two are the color of the fruitbodies. H. fasciculare will appear to have a sulfur yellow color int he stipe and gills and H. capnoides will have a light grey orange color in the gills and stipe.

H. fasciculare

H. capnoides

H. caponides on the right H. fasciculare to the left

Taste
is a great way, along with what joust said. H. fasisculare go through a phase where gills appear greenish too.
