Some woods can poison food. if you let the wood burn untill it is all completely red hot coals, the the poisons are usually all burned out by then.
Hard woods are usually safer.

Would it be easier to just not piss your mom off so that you have a warm place to stay?

What you may have heard about getting "poisoned" from burning different types of wood was probably in relation to burning poison ivy/oak/sumac. Don't burn vines, and be careful about any wood with vines growing on it. If you do happen to burn some poison ivy or related irritant vine, you could end up in the hospital with respiratory issues.
Your best bet for cooking with open fires is to burn all of the wood down to embers.
Or, yeah, you could do what Ackbar said. Makes sense, too.
