600lb Black Marlin jumps in boat off Australia

Hey guys,
Not sure if you have heard or seen it, but one of the fleet up in Cairns fishing the Giant Black Marlin fishery had a very close call with a 600lb Black Marlin. It launched itself into the boat and back out again with debris and crew flying all over the deck. Luckily nobody was seriously injured and the fish was released. Apparently it's gone viral on somebody else's account, but this is the charter company's youtube.
Enjoy!!

Funny part about that is it isn't the first time this has happened, they had a fish of about half that size jump into the boat. See video below.
Also, the skipper of the boat had a marlin's bill go through his leg when he was a teen. He seems to be drawn to these kinds of accidents hahaha
Go to 3:15 to see the fish come into the boat.

Absent Minded, I could imagine it would have been and he needed surgery to repair his calf muscle. I have copped whacks in the arms and face from the bills of Marlin and I know how unpleasant it can be due to a bacteria they have on their bills. Couldn't imagine how much it would hurt going though a limb.
When he was a teen, he was a prospect for the Rugby League teams here in Australia - eventually, he was going to have to make a choice between being a professional sportsman or be a fisherman as he couldn't devote the time to fishing that he did beforehand if he became a professional player. That accident decided his future for him and he couldn't have been happier. Alot of people were going to be disappointed in him if he chose fishing and that was what he wanted to do. He was almost thankful for the fish deforming his leg, talk about the glass being half full!!

Yeah for real! Shit man not this last summer but the one before that. Some big shark or small whale breached out a ways from the boat. It honestly looked like a great white from the vids I have seen. But on the east coast thats pretty much unheard of. No one on the boat noticed but i was looking the right way when it happened. it seemed like a torpedo shaped station wagon popped out of the ocean. Wasn't a close call but it freaked me out a little. But on a side note I hooked up a nice yellow fin tuna that day. Shit I love getting out from the harbor and just opening up and running for 30+ miles just skipping along.

Any chance it could've been a big Bluefin Tuna?? I have been watching Wicked Tuna on Nat Geo lately and some of the tuna they have caught on there were bigger than the biggest Marlin I have ever caught (about 600lb). I've caught some Yellowfin and Pacific Bluefin tuna, but the biggest tuna I have seen woukd;ve been somewhere around 180-190lb. Not the 1000lb+ behemoths that are on the east coast over there. They also don't seem to travel far to fish for them, how deep is the water they're in??
Completely agree about getting out there and opening up the taps on the motor though. Earlier this year I did a tournament out of Port Stephens here in Australia, a place which is the greatest Marlin fishing destination in the world IMO (with maybe the exception of Cairns). We were greeted to oily-calm seas and it made the 40 mile run to the grounds nice at about 30-35 knots!! Got tags in 4 fish over those 2 days, should've been more caught but we had issues with rigging that we weren't really aware of until after the tourney. Oh well!

You know what. It could have been! Now that i think about it, the profile was exactly like a huge tuna! Looking at pictures I'd say it was maybe around 800 easy.
I wonder how geared up the tackle needs to be to take something like that. I think my friend runs 50 or 60# class rods on his boat. I imagine the lures and bait would need to be double the size we usually run.
Dude if we caught a fish like that !!
I just looked up a video of buefin breaching and now I'm pretty confident in that thats what I saw and after looking at pictures of 1000 pound bluefin I think it probably was real close. I think we where not all the way out to the canyons yet maybe going through the mudhole. Now that I'm looking up the mudhole I'm seeing huge tuna being produced there.

For tuna that size, I couldn't imagine using anything less than 80lb gear...even that is probably a little bit light for fish of around 1000lb. I would simply use 130lb tackle for those big tuna, it's the heaviest that is legally allowed under IGFA rules and should stop those fish. I typically use 50lb test here in Australia to catch most billfish, although I do break out the 20lb and 30lb when I have a good crew onboard and feel like a bit of a challenge. Used 80lb very rarely, never used 130lb tackle. Would love to be yanked out of a chair using 130lb on one of those big tuna, it would definitely be a memorable experience!!
Have you seen any of the videos from Prince Edward Island? Bluefin tuna of up to 1200lb in schools - all feeding boat-side on bait being thrown into the water by the deckies. Absolutely amazing stuff

ow! that sucks. but that's a nice story. That'd be a good way to make a living no doubt. Especially if you loved doing it.
