outdoor cyanescens advice.
    #17233019 - 11/16/12 11:56 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I have some spawn that i plan on spreading to woodchips outside in the spring but before that i have some questions and would like advice from people who are experienced in this. i have looked at many guides and grow logs and seen a huge variety of methods used.

my current plan is to use about 3-4 inches of chips and a thin top casing of a peat/potting soil/chip mix in a raised planter bed. Then plant grass and strawberrys and letting wild weeds grow in it.

is an inch of this casing enough to allow plants to grow onto the fresh chips? also what types of plants and what type of grass is best to plant on my patch?

any advice from somebody experienced in making outdoor beds would be much appreciated and ill post more questions here as i think of them.

I'd recommend maybe two inches of soil.  What are you guys keeping your moist cardboard in?  I had it in a tray in one of the cabinets, but it was drying out extremely fast so i bought some small Tupperware and have bits of cardboard in there with the lids a little off kilter.  That way they can still breath a little, but they retain most of their moisture.

I just don't want them to get/stay too wet.. :/

You should pick up Mycelium Running.

Soak woodchips and cardboard. Dig a hole. Put the cardboard in it.
Mix the soil from your dig with some chips. Lay down a layer of that. Then some spawn. Then layer some more chips.
Sprinkle with remaining soil debris and disperse whatever seeds you want or let nature seed it herself.

You can do all of this in a planter as well. Skip the cardboard. Just chips and soil and spawn.

There some more info. in my sig link (scroll down to the woodlovers section.)

i didnt use cardboard i went straight from stem butts to woodchips in a small tuppleware container. 2 inchs of casing seems like a lot for the mushrooms to grow through if i want a nice full flush off the chips.. but i dont really know personally since ive never done it. still would like more advice on this. seems like it wouldnt need to be very thick since fresh chips should be added each year anyways.

So ive got somthing im a little stuck on and could use some advice.

I started my spawn by taking stem butts and sandwhiching them in wood chips in a small container and used tacs to keep one side open for fresh air. I made 3 of these and once they were half colonized and had spread onto the chips i took the bottom of a cardboard box and made some chips/peat/and potting soil and through in a container of woodchips that i mixed blended mushroom into about a month before. I sandwiched the colonized chips between the mixture in the cardboard box.

So i left this outside under a bush for like 2 days.. then it started getting a little frosty in the morning and i got worried. Now its been sitting full exposed in a half open drawer inside. Im worried about the temp inside being too high and about it being exposed to mold indoors. But im also worried about the slight freezing in the mornings outside.

So whats the better option here? inside or out?

You made three, so you have some experimenting to do IMO! :super:
Try one to two inside and the other(s) outside. See which does better.

Most woodlovers can handle light frosts. They might not grow much, but they are hardy. Inside or out, you face the risk of competitors. In fact, they are intrinsically a part of any woodlover cultivation, but FAE is usually enough to inhibit them. Keep an eye on 'em, though, and move them all outside if they start getting contaminants showing.
