What part of California? I hope you're not in the thick of the wildfires.
Tonight we had whole wheat penne rigate with homemade saffron Alfredo, roasted broccoli, and sautéed "Spanish" (i.e. Iberian herbs & spices) chicken/veggie chicken. I got the idea from an awesome local restaurant that regularly serves saffron Alfredo pasta. My sister brought some herbs and spices back from a Middle Eastern vacation, and I had never cooked with actual saffron threads. I can totally see this becoming a very expensive habit as it is a delicious addition to almost everything!

north of LA. one of the fires is near where i live, but last i knew that one was under control if not completely out. i kind of live in a little oasis where fires are concerned: there will be fires in santa barbara and malibu but not close enough for concern.
anyway, i'll make a chile relleno thread when i get home on tuesday. what's super impressive about the making of the chile relleno is the condition of the kitchen i was making it in. once we get back up north from this little trip we took to here (still in oregon), i'm gonna make yellow curry and probably chicken tikka masala. those will both be interesting--again, considering the state of the kitchen and cookware--plus, i've never made curry before.

yellow curry tonight. omnomnom. first time making it, i think it came out pretty good. not as good as i've had it at thai places where everyone who works there is Thai, but definitely decent enough. learned a few things while making it (as far as my tastes are concerned), and i thin next time will be even better.
i'll get pictures up when i get home. unfortunately, i couldn't find any kaffir lime leaves, probably couldn't even if i really really wanted to, not here. next time, next time. hell, i even had to order curry paste from amazon to make this, as no place around here carries it, so now there is like 15 oz. of yellow curry paste that i put in a jar and have no idea what to do with (i don't think i can take it on the plane with me, and my friend will definitely not use it). maybe i'll snail mail it to myself; that's probably my best bet.

Yeah I sure do. Sea Urchin can definitely be an acquired taste, but I've learned to love it.

Sea urchin is definitely an acquired taste. I remember when I was a child, I couldn't STAND the taste of uni. Most children do not like the taste of sea urchin. Monkeys also don't either, apparently.

Someone gave my husband bison Italian sausage, so I simmered them in beer, browned them, then stewed them in marinara with broccoli and cauliflower. I did the same with Tofurkey Italian sausage for myself. I served it all up over whole wheat penne with cannellini beans mixed in.
That's right: two starches, kids. But beans are mainly fiber and protein, I feel vindicated somehow.

Shrimp tacos.
Seared the shrimp in my new wok over super high heat and took 'em out. Stir fried some portabello, onion, zucchini, jalapeno, and bell pepper after the shrimp then tossed the shrimp back in to finish. Squeezed some lime over it and put it in some corn tortillas with sliced avocado and roasted habanero salsa. Dankness. My new wok is getting nice and seasoned.

Last night it was filet/veggie steak with fresh, local sweet corn on the cob w/ cayenne butter and cucumber&tomato salad in red wine vinaigrette. I was going to make dessert, but we got these amazing red grapes in our veg box and those became dessert of themselves.
Tonight was taco night with fresh corn salsa, fresh pico de gallo, black beans&rice . . . crispy ground pork for the husband.
Tomorrow will be veggie lasagna (red bells, zucchini, onions) with homemade bechamel and marinara so we have leftovers for the weekend.
