Pluteus Salicinus in UK?

Hi,
After finding a species of Pluteus growing in a field recently I became aware via Googling the genus that there is another species called Pluteus Salicinus which is apparently active and 'widely distributed' throughout Europe. Has anyone ever found one of these woodlovers in the UK? Wikipedia claims that it's nickname - The 'Knackers Crumpet' - is "a localised, common name referring to Pluteus salicinus. Its use is most prominent in the North of England" which suggests it must grow round these parts, but I have read elsewhere that Semilanceata and Cyanescens are the only actives growing in the UK.
Can anyone shed any light?
Cheers

> After finding a species of Pluteus growing in a field That's odd. They usually grow in forested areas.
> Has anyone ever found one of these woodlovers in the UK? Undoubtedly, but if you're looking to get high, then there are easier ways.

Yeah, I thought it was odd to find a load of Pluteus in a ploughed field too, but 2 TIs on here identified them for me. They were all in one patch, so maybe there could be wood under the ground?
Re: the Salinicus, are you saying they're out there but are elusive as hell?
Cheers.

According to an occurrence map for Britain (the link was posted on this forum in another thread some time ago), Pluteus salicinus grows all over your islands.
I'd guess your finds from that field were growing from old root systems long overgrown with moss and grass.
Even if you choose libs for tripping you should go ahead hunting for P. salicinus, it is a really cool mushroom imo.

Well, I'll certainly keep an eye out for it, as I do for all mushrooms, active and not, but I've never seen anything that looks like the Google images of it. Can you offer any more info. on preferred habitat, temps etc?

Pluteus salicinus grows from summer to fall on dead wood from deciduous trees in damp forests.
There are many incorrect photos on the web. Some photos of the real Pluteus salicinus:

One T.I. gave you a tentative ID of Volvopluteus or Pluteus but you didn't follow up. Your mushroom was a Volvopluteus; possibly V. gloiocephalus.

Yeah, I couldn't really follow it up as they were found 40 miles from my home and I didn't collect any. Advice noted though - I wouldn't try eating any mushrooms without a spore print and a few 100% IDs anyway.
Thanks for the pics Spor - I'll definately be keeping my eyes peeled for those on future woodland forays.

What color spore print does the P. salicinus produce, is it salmon pink like the P. cervinus?

Yes, all Pluteus have that spore color, microscopy helps a lot with Pluteus.

Wow, that is a great description of the spore print color! Thank you, I am going to use that from now on

Hi, welcome to the Shroomery, but please don't bump old threads unless for very good reason. This thread is almost 10 years old, and the OP hasn't logged in in over 9 years so is unlikely to read it. If you find Pluteus salicinus in the UK we would be interested in seeing that, but please start your own thread.
